Canon 7D Mark II Help?

November 1st, 2014

I just received my new 7D Mark II yesterday and even though I have updated my Adobe Software, the raw files cannot be opened on my Mac! Does anyone have any suggestions/advice/links on how to troubleshoot this issue? Thanks so very much!

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do but wait -- pretty much every camera uses a slightly different proprietary raw file format, and it takes Adobe and other third-party manufacturers a few weeks to update their software. The 7D Mark II is too new to be supported by Adobe yet.

You can keep an eye on their beta software release page for a new version of the DNG converter, which will probably be released first, allowing you to convert the 7D's raw files into DNG files that Photoshop and Lightroom can open:
http://labs.adobe.com/

The October 2nd release candidate doesn't include support for the 7D Mark II, so you'll need to keep an eye out for a newer release. Note that these are development versions so may have minor bugs, but will get you support as soon as possible. The final release will probably be pushed out a few weeks later.

In the meantime, you'll need to use Canon's own DPP software to process the raw files from your 7D Mark II. You can export files in the 16-bit TIFF format, which you can import into Lightroom and develop in much the same way as you would a raw file.

Hope that helps!

Canon 7d MK II and Lightroom + RAW Question
submitted 17 hours ago by goldstar19
Good Morning Photography, I have a question related to my new Canon 7d MK II and Lightroom. How long does it take on average before Adobe supports a new camera's RAW format? I have never had a brand new camera when it was released so I wasn't thinking about not being able to edit in Lightroom 5.6. I have the Canon Digital Photo software and can convert to JPEG but I would prefer to be able to use Lightroom as that is what I am most familiar with. Is there some kind of workaround or plug in I can use?
Thanks for your input.

There might be sothing wrong with your card. We have a 7dMKII at work and have no issues opening the RAW files in Lightroom or PS Camera Raw. It doesn't register the camera but the files open up fine.

So glad to see this topic...just lookin'....lol....did a side by side comparison of the 7D and 70D and it said only jpeg on the 7d m2...obviously this is wrong as I see you guys talking about RAW converters just not being there yet on PS/LR etc.
Can anyone give me some idea if the 7D is that much 'better' than the 70D?

@lynnb Absolutely, both shoot in raw, so no concerns there.

There are a great many similarities between the two cameras, they are both high-end models with the latest sensors from Canon, and have a great set of features.

The 'big-ticket' advantages that the 7D Mark II (7D2) has over the 70D are primarily the autofocus system, the framerate, and the build quality.

Bear in mind that the 70D already excels in all of these areas, the 7D2 just takes them an extra step further. Canon are really targeting the 7D2 at professional and semi-professional wildlife and sports photographers, a market that they have left a little undercatered since they discontinued the 1D Mark IV.

If you are doing a lot of this type of photography, then the 65 focus points of the 7D2 (more than the Canon 5D3 or 1DX) and the 10 frame per second shooting rate (in RAW with full autofocus), combined with the crop-factor of the smaller sensor (turning a 400mm lens into a 600mm lens) makes this pretty formidable for this type of use. The 7D2 also has better weatherproofing, allowing it to be used in more extreme conditions, although this also needs to be paired with a weatherproofed lens (generally only Canon L lenses, and not all of those are sealed).

Of course, you can use the 7D2 to do landscape, portrait and just about any other kind of photography, but in those cases you will not be getting the most out of the features that cause it to have such a high price tag.

The 70D gives you most of the same basic features as the 7D2, but scales back on that framerate and autofocus system. The 70D is still a formidable camera for the amateur or semi-professional wildlife or sports photographer, sharing the same excellent autofocus system that the original 7D had, and still having a framerate of 7fps, which is extremely fast. It still has weatherproofing, but at a lower level than the 7D2.

Those are the main differences, although of course there are a number of smaller variations, such as Wifi, and an articulating screen on the 70D, vs. GPS, 100% viewfinder coverage and a slightly better sensor on the 7D2 (although the sensor difference is probably not noticeable to many people in real-life scenarios). If any of those is vitally important to you, of course that should factor into your decision.

To summarise, in my opinion, if you are doing a lot of wildlife or sports photography and want the highest framerate and best autofocus system, the 7D2 is an obvious choice. For more general photography, while the 7D2 will still perform slightly better than the 70D in some situations, I'd personally be tempted to put the $800 price difference towards a good-quality lens instead.

Thank you so much Alexis! You have explained in a way that I can easily understand....I do have the 70D since it came out....and like it...I do a lot of birding shots (my primary objective) and have a Sigma 150-500 lens that I use all the time (mostly hand-held too). So I will sit on it for now and maybe someday look at a prime 400 lens or something of that sort. Thanks again. @abirkill

@vskolnik If you haven't already spotted, Lightroom 5.7 and Adobe Camera Raw 5.7 were released a few hours ago and support raw files from the 7D Mark II:

@abirkill Great! Thanks for the heads up :)

As it claims, Premiere CS4 and up supports MOV H.264 - which is what the Canon 7D Mark II makes, but it's not optimal for editing anyhow. It may bring horrible playback or long-time rendering before editing. Here we recommend another workflow- converting 7D Mark II MOV from one codec to another as a result. Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac is a great tool to help you make it.
