Can we use photos from a smartphone? Also, are there requirements regarding size of photo (I'm not a "technical" person) regarding pixels width and length? Or
quality?
You absolutely may use photos from a smartphone. In fact, if you look at "cameras" under "browse," you will see that the 9th most used camera on this site right now is the iPhone5s. I don't think you have to worry about changing size. I've uploaded photos from two different iPhones and two different DSLR's during the course of my project and never had to change the size of any of them. I take it you are new to the 365Project. Just get out there and shoot and post. Follow the projects that you like and some will follow you back. And, when you're ready, jump in and try some of the themes/competitions (Look under discuss above). There's some great people on this site that you will "meet" along the way. Most of all have fun with it! Enjoy!
The maximum display size in 365 is 1,024 pixels on the long side. If you upload anything bigger than that, it will "down sample" to that size. For a snapshot, this will be fine, but for a significant down-sample, the edges and the sharpness will probably be affected, particularly if there are large contrasts against the edges. You'll often see "haloes" injected in these cases too. Personally, I resample all my uploads to the 1,024 number and finally sharpen and adjust the edges to get them how I want them. 365 after all has no idea what your image is, and will simply apply one standard algorithm. Many people don't care how the process affects their images. I do.
The "dpi" number, sometimes (mistakenly) called "resolution" is irrelevant to an internet upload, and so for 365 in particular. The pixel count is all that matters.
And of course, any camera including film, point and shoot and phone/tablet camera is perfectly fine. As well as the most expensive DSLRs and mirror-less system cameras.
@frankhymus Thanks, Frank. I never knew what the maximum display size was and since I view 365 mainly on a laptop I was never sure if it was my small screen size the kept me from seeing the large images. Good to know... I've been downsampling to 2500px on the long side. Still too big for the best sharpness...
