Any Avid Gimp Users - Question on Installing New Brushes

January 13th, 2015
I actually have enjoyed getting to know my way around Gimp. I don't have PS and for what I do, Gimp has served me well so far. In any event, you wouldn't have opened this if you didn't use this so I'm hoping you can help me.

Could you give me step-by-step directions on how the heck to load new brushes into here? I found some free sites ...

They come in a zip folder and here's what I did so far: Saved the zip folder to my desktop - then right clicked and hit extract all. It asks where I want the files extracted to, and I did choose Gimp ... brushes folder, but they are not in there and I restarted Gimp and everything. I'm so frustrated and not really technology proficient, I do what I can to get by and lots of Google videos :) but this one has me stumped.

But then in my downloads it's giving me an ABR extension - no clue what that is or how to maneuver it. I Googled it and someone said to download an ABR reader, but AVG blocked it said it's adware so I don't want to take the chance of putting a virus on my computer. So nervous downloading stuff I know nothing about.

I hope someone can help or else I wasted a lot of time typing this lol

I Gimp only on Linux, so I can't check the Windows installation instructions I found. They mention both hidden directories (directory names beginning with a period) and are under /User, neither of which you mentioned.

Do you know how to show hidden directories? After you've installed the brushes, follow the same steps then turn off 'Show hidden files, folders and drives' because leaving them visible makes it too easy to accidentally break windows or an installed program.

are you sure it's not VBR? The gimp documentation says it recognizes VBR and GBR (and GIH) extensions only. I'm reasonably sure that ABR is the extensions for a photoshop brush. I think that you inadvertently downloaded brushes for photoshop. The files are not interchangeable but many sites have both brushes available, so you have to make sure to download the correct (GIMP) version.

@fotoblah @francoise Thank you both for your responses. I actually figured it out late last night - they were in there - I just had to hit some little button on the toolbox bar at the bottom right and they popped up. I now have new brushes! And some PS brushes are compatible with Gimp brushes much to my amazement. I will be downloading more tonight! I'll post my finished picture here when done - I really wanted a moon one and found the perfect one! Thanks again. Usually when I'm determined to figure something out, I do or die trying lol

@not_left_handed I will try this! I've created brushes, but never download.

@fotoblah @francoise Here's my picture that I used moon and mist brushes - I was so stoked since this was my first time trying them out. I'll have fun learning more about this technique I'm sure.
