2010 365ers: The Final Straight!

December 2nd, 2010
Well... this is a thread for all of us who started our Projects on the 1st of January 2010. Guess what - WE'RE NEARLY THERE! Can you believe it? So what have been your highlights and lowlights with your pics this year?

For me, Project 365 has contributed towards yanking me out of a serious creative drought which has lasted a few years. As such, I'll be moving (hopefully!) into bigger things next year as it's boosted my confidence. I've definitely become a better photographer. My composition skills have got much better to the extent that some of the later photos don't require any cropping or reframing; some I've managed to capture just how I want them.

As for lowlights, I've shot some right turkeys when I was just lazy or lacking in inspiration! Too many screenshots of the telly I think! Also, I completely messed up my choice of initial workflow which meant I was behind with my uploading for about three months as it was totally impractical. I went searching for a dedicated 365 platform and found ths site around May - so that became the main highlight as I'd found a like-minded community. These things are so much better when everyone comments on each other's stuff.

Anyway... congrats on getting this far! Keep going - only a few days left now!

I know, it's crazy! I can't believe I've made it the whole way almost!
I also realized how vastly my photo skills have improved. I started this with an old p&s.

I'm going to feel so lost when it's over. Maybe I should do it all over again?

Group hug! Cue some Top Gun music or something... or maybe Rocky...

Anyway. Highlights: well, probably the "community" aspect and all the sorts I follow and who follow me and the little circle of commentardery we have going. As you say, it sure does help things along, I can't imagine I'd still be doing this if I didn't have all these fine folks around. The fact that I seem to think the stuff I take these days is better than the stuff I took before. Which brings me on to...

Lowlights: Similarly, the days when inspiration evaporates and I just post any old thing, or actually, those days when I suddenly decide to look at my entire photo history. Doing it in reverse order is a very dumb idea because it starts off "not that bad" and ends with "Holy smeg why am I even bothering turning up". My early stuff was appalling.

@The Steve: Definitely a bad idea to go backwards, I agree! :o) But what I find interesting is that my Day 6 is still my overall personal favourite of the entire project (so far!). I think it was just one of those flash moments when everything "works", you know? I thought another one would come along eventually and beat it; there have been a few which have come close, but Day 6 is still my fave.

@eyebrows - Rocky? Right ... tomorrow your photo has to be you running up some steps ...

Anyway ...

Highlights: Agree with Steve, the community aspect is great - Learning how to use my camera ... Discovering the M42 adaptor and the incredibly cheap prime lens for said adaptor ... thinking about photos and how to produce them .. involving family and friends in photos (I'm thinking of a farewell set!) and the project ...

Lowlights: The feeling that you MUST take a photo ... To be honest I'll be glad when we hit the magic number, then photography will become fun again and not a task.

Thanks @scrivna for the site - top man!

Assuming I can (be bothered to) find an accomplice to look after the camera and/or tripod and take the shot... you're on @edpartridge !
December 2nd, 2010
@edpartridge I know what you mean. It's an incredibly long slog. I've definitely come to the decision that this will be it - for now, at least. But my camera has been such a permanent fixture on my belt that I'll probably keep it there. I just won't run back home when I realise I've forgotten it half way to the station - I've missed a few trains, I can tell you! That's another of my lowlights!

Congrats to all of you for making it this far!!!
December 2nd, 2010
@electricwriter @eyebrows @edpartridge @do11face

You're sticking around for 2011, right? :D
December 2nd, 2010
Not sure unfie, I mean @indiannie_jones , I have a couple ideas though...
December 2nd, 2010
@eyebrows You could change it up a bit to avoid having to take a photo each day. It'll be fun, princess!
December 2nd, 2010
Ed
@indiannie_jones - I'll be around, but will only post when I want to post ... No electronic spreadsheet is going to dictate my life for me. (Well, not for a 2nd year anyway)
December 2nd, 2010
@edpartridge Fair enough :) nice to know you're not abandoning us!
December 2nd, 2010
@indiannie_jones I won't disappear completely. Those of us who won't start another project can be re-employed by the community as "consultants"! Ha ha ha!
December 2nd, 2010
@electricwriter You wanna be a 365 monkey, don't you?
December 2nd, 2010
December 2nd, 2010
@eyebrows Yeah Steve, you got me into this, you can't abandon me now! ; ) 2011!, 2011!, 2011!
December 2nd, 2010
I'm doing 2011 :D
December 2nd, 2010
The end is in sight! Mad props to everyone who is finishing!
I can't believe I am completing this project. I have definitely lacked motivation some days, and I have fallen behind more than I care to admit. (It's good to get a nudge from the 365 team saying "we haven't heard from you in awhile...")
Like everyone else, I love getting feedback and I wish I was more diligent about making comments. I have learned a lot and played a lot and feel happy with my project thus far. I feel like I have found some kindred spirits around the world and that is so cool.
I plan to be back for 2011 and try to post photographs that do more than simply record my day to day life! Cheers all!

good thread.. i was thinking the same thing a little while ago.. its the home stretch guys!! yeah baby!

@eyebrows i think we need a rocky-esque montage mate.

As for me, I dont know what the world holds for me.. I may put down my camera for a while. I think i'll stop doing as many studio shoots - i'm not convinced that i'm great at it but I may try the 100 strangers challenge and brush up on my people skills

December 2nd, 2010
@do11face You must start again! Pretty please!!! =D
December 3rd, 2010
I think I can..I think I can...I think I can... can I?
December 3rd, 2010
After reading this I'm kinda tempted to take my last photo at the Philadelphia Art Museum with someone running up the steps!
December 3rd, 2010
Just this week the back screen of my camera stopped working so I can't preview any pics I've taken or change my White balance - but I'm not going to let that get me down when I'm this close to finishing! I do have missing days in my project but I'm really proud of how much my skills have developed over the course of this year. This final month has inadvertently turned into the ultimate test of my photography skills as I try to work in full manual mode with no means of telling if I've got the right aperture/shutter combination or not XD But with the end in sight I'm really fired up and I've got a list of things I want to finally get off my bum and get a picture of before the end of the project!
December 6th, 2010
25 days to go! Keep going, chaps!
December 6th, 2010
I can't believe the end is almost here--so proud of myself for never missing a day and never having a filler!!! I think I will continue but not sure about every day--maybe just for the highlights of the year...I have definitely seen an improvement in my pictures....now I want a better camera!! :) Congrats to everyone!! :)
December 7th, 2010
I, too, am finishing on Jan 1 but I plan to re-up. After all, I bought 2 cameras this year, the cost of which would be hard to justify if I didn't intend to continue shooting and posting on a regular basis. C'mon guys, it'll be fun! I just wish my real life didn't require so much time. Time when I could be looking at your pictures and making comments. One thing I know I will have to do, and that is start following a whole bunch of new friends after many of my current buddies disappear.
December 7th, 2010
i started late on 365.. shame on me T___T but i am definitely lovin' here... =)

im seeing lots of great works, creative minds and learning a lot.... ^__^
December 12th, 2010
We're down into the teens now, chaps! Things are starting to get serious. I've noticed that I've been paying more attention to trying to find interesting subjects to shoot. I've banned myself from taking any more screen shots of the telly! Ha ha!
December 13th, 2010
nice one matt.. i find that i've gone in the opposite direction.. theres so much happening that i'm stuck taking photos of easy things.. cats... food... you get the idea
