Merging 3 images in PS...please help me!!

June 16th, 2015
I would like to hear from anyone who can guide me through how to merge 3 images into one in PS. I did a shoot with a 6 month old and there are several images that would really work if they were merged to 'tell a story' in a single image. You will need to keep it simple as my PS skills are 'absolute beginner' standard BUT any help is really appreciated. So go on let me have it!!

Are you trying to do a collage / tryptich? Or a multiplicity shot? The techniques are completely different so it would be helpful to know in order to point you in the right direction...

@northy Its a multiplicity shot I guess. I did a studio shoot and caught some great gestures of a 6 month old and wanted to group them in one image rather than 3 separate images. I hope that makes sense. I assume it involves layers and such like but any help is much appreciated.

Hey Andy... I can try to write something up to help you tonight, but for starters

1 - search the discussion threads here on 365 for the sandbox tutorial on multiplicity

2 - search YouTube for adorama's tutorial on multiplicity... One or the other shld get you started...

Andy, was the camera always in the same position and only the 6 month old moving around, balanced sitting up or being held by an adult? Lastly, like @northy says, each technique (just layering, triptych, blending or multiplicity) take different approaches. Have you posted all three pictures separately in one or more albums on 365 so I can take a look?

@byrdlip I have tried blending the 2 images but it won't let me do what it says in the tutorial. It says to open the images and then click and drag 1 and then drop on the other. But the whole panel lights up as though they are locked...and its driving me insane!!!

Andy try doing it with layers. open your base image, preferably the same colour as your photo's backgrounds. or as close as you can get it. and copy and paste each of the others as a new layer. then use your eraser and your deform tool to get rid of the bits of the photos you don't want, and change the sizes to all fit into one frame. Definitely helps if the backgrounds are all the same colour.

Hi Andy this is a link to the YouTube tutorial that I used last month for our camera club task, it might help.

@andysg Andy.... you first need to get all the images into one file in PS - as different layers... if they are all open as separate files in PS, easiest thing to do is to click on "select", then "all"... then go over to "edit" and click on "copy"... then switch to the file you want to move the image to and click "paste"... keep repeating this until all the images are in the same file...

then, rather than using the erase tool, i would use layer masks... i would try to describe how this works, but i expect the youtube video posted by Sherill covers it way better than i could...
