Which Flash?

July 30th, 2015
Hi all! People keep asking me to photograph indoor and/or evening events and so I think I need to invest in a decent flash. At the moment I have a Sunpak pf30x, which is fine so long as I only want to point the flash up or down (it doesn't rotate) and so long as I only want to take one photo per 30 secs/minute. As I'm generally taking photos of children I need a flash that can keep up with them. Currently I keep missing the good shots because my flash takes too long to charge up. I end up using the pop up which clearly isn't ideal.

I have a Canon 70D. Can anyone recommend a good, fast flash please :) THANK YOU! x

I'm sure you will get lots of recommendations here. The obvious safe route is staying in the Canon line, but that comes at a price. The 600EX-RT is a very, very nice flash at $499. On the other end of the spectrum, the Yongnuo YN-568EX II is a budget alternative at just over $100 for the equivalent but now discontinued Canon flash (the 580ex I think was the model?) that was hugely popular. The Yongnuo has a pretty good track record for compatibility, and although definitely not as durable as the brand name flash, it holds up quite well. Although I do not personally own a Yongnuo, I have colleagues that do and they have been pleased with them.

Thanks for asking this question as I'll be looking to see the advice!

Meike is another "off brand" that has worked well for me. On Nikon cameras though, emulating the top of the line Speedlights. 20% of the price 90% of the function, and excellent quality as far as I have seen so far. Here is what amazom.com have for Canon, a master/slave kit too for off camera flash, if the 70D built in flash can't act as a commander.
