After the Crash (LR Help)

December 21st, 2015
Hi all,

I hope everyone is enjoying the last few weeks of the year! So many people must be close to ending a full year!!!

I've run into an unfortunate event--my desktop PC hard drive gave out -- took a long time to recover the data on it, but I did with the help of a friend. I did recover the material; however, now I must find a way to get all my LR5 material back in the right place. I am not exactly sure of the steps and I will research further on my own, but in the off chance someone knows the steps, I would love that information.

My guess is that I will download LR5 to the new computer. I will need to access the backed up files (that was done regularly) and the previews. I don't know if this is an "import" job or a "copy" job. I do not have use the cloud, so we are talking using the program on the computer (by download).

Any tips would be great. This happened to me awhile ago, and unfortunately, I ended up with two separate catalogs as a result. Would really like to avoid that again if possible.

I'll have to go find my annual "way to go" letter to 365ers and the top reasons to sign onto this amazing site! So look for another post soon.

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm thankful to have the material. I thought I was going to lose 6 months worth of edits I made on my Bali/Japan shots! Yikes!

xoxo,

Daryl

If your LR catalog is intact then you can just copy the folder with the Lightroom files in it and should be fine. Or create a new catalog and try doing an import from existing catalog.

If the catalog is not intact you will likely have to create a new catalog and reimport the images.

Although I like Lightroom, my workflow includes importing first with Photo Mechanic and installing keywords etc then, so that they are embedded into the files and not as sidecar files and reimporting files does not mean starting over again on the catalog process.

When I reformatted, I imported all files/folders again. Took quite a while, but everything is there.

Adobe's tech support number is toll free, and they will walk you through the procedure, one step at a time, stay on the phone with you until it is accomplished.

@jeffjones @danette @bill_fe It's viewable from the external drive with my backups. Will now see about the organization part. Thanks Bill, will do!
