Social Alternatives - Flickr; Instagram etc.

March 30th, 2016
It appears that we as photographers will soon be subjected to some changes in our social networking. Instagram has gone to an algorithm to show photos it thinks you will like to your feed rather than show the photos as they get posted chronologically. See:Instagram Apocalypse This means that the low follow count users will get even less views of their images. There are protests online to it, but since Instagram is part of Facebook it is unlikely they will back down. However, if there are enough protests and the protests are vocal enough then maybe they will change things back. Just look at what happened when Adobe tried to change the import functionality in Lightroom.

Another adjustment we are looking at is the new issues with Flickr - the auto uploader desktop app is now a paid service only. (See: "Flicker Loader No Longer Free) And they have caps on how much you can upload each month. I was considering paying their fee, but just heard that flickr is now one of the properties that Yahoo is trying to put up for sale. (see: a< href="http://petapixel.com/2016/03/29/looks-like-flickr-now-sale/">Flickr now for Sale) As a result I will be waiting to see how things work out before I put any more effort or spend any money on them.

So, aside from this site, what are your online sharing preferences? I know there are many, such as Youpic, 500px, EyeEm, Oggl and VSCO. What are you doing to share your photos and what are your reasons for using them?

Gaaaaah! This kind of thing makes me want to crawl under a table and wait for the dust to settle... I don't fb... I occasionally Instagram, but only occasionally... I am on Flickr and keep meaning to spend more time there, but so far that hasn't happened as my time is so limited... And because I've got log in issues with them... And now I'm wondering whether I should just the throw in the towel and keep it to 365 only... I suck at social networking in any event ;p

I haven't bothered with Instagram since they were bought by Facebook. My day-to-day phone snaps get shared on Twitter.
I used to use Flickr all the time but barely visit since they started redesigning it in 2013. My main photo-sharing sites now (bar here) are Tumblr and ipernity.com - but I don't spend a great deal of time on either. I choose them because they both look good on an iPad (I use the FlickStackr app for ipernity).
I should add that I'm not particularly motivated by views or faves, and mainly share photos online as a lazy way to make them viewable by myself and my other half on different computers/tablets, so I'm not sure how relevant my choices are to others.

I agree, I don't mind paying for storage and service - I just don't want it to suddenly disappear (look at how Dropbox recently closed Carousel; Copy.com shut down; etc.). I would be willing to pay the money to Flickr - I just don't want to pay it and suddenly have things changed or worse, have it close.

At the moment I use Flickr mainly for the 1Tb of storage that you get for free. I load photo's direct from LR so that's still free it's only the auto uploaded that's a paid for service. I do pay £7 a month for LR and PS but I think that's very good value for money.
