Recommendations for new laptop

March 5th, 2017
My laptop has been playing up for a while now and there's only so much I can do with my phone, also it's too small to see photos well and the old eyesight's getting worse! I would like some recommendations on the best laptops for photo editing. I don't have enough money for a mac unfortunately.

Why is an apple too expensive? You can get an apple air for $400. That's probably because they're discontinued with the new models, however they are still supported. I use an air - with an external hard drive and cloud saving since mine has not much memory - and it's great!

I think Lenovo ThinkPads are good too.

@irisn In the UK that model, refurbished, you are talking about at least double the price so not very affordable for me and also I can't really justify the price unfortunately. I currently have a lenovo so will look into a thinkpad thanks

Hi Lisa, what sort of editing? Fairly straightforward in PS, or lots of merges and / or processing big batches in LR / PS?

If it's the former, anything with a) a decent sort of screen, b) at least an Intel i3 (ideally an i5), and c) 8 gig of RAM should be plenty. In an ideal world, it would have a 128GB or 256GB SSD, and a 1TB HDD -- but you could manage back ups with external drives and / or the cloud.

Depending on real estate and your needs, you might look at a desktop system, too -- more bang for the buck, much easier on the eyes and to work with. A Microsoft Surface Pro might be worth a look, although if your eyes are ageing, could feel a bit constricted (they are excellent if you are travelling / moving around a lot).

The Tech section in the Guardian is worth reading. They recently recommended an HP 17-x013na with 17.3-Inch screen, You can get this for about £480 from Amazon. It happens to be what I have and am using right now, and it meets the spec described by @scotthouston (i3 processor). It is fine but when I am at home I prefer to use my desktop which has an even larger screen.
