Ok, so I'm new here. I've seen my brother (manek43509) do this project for a while now and mostly just couldn't be bothered to try myself.
But this year I decided I needed a New Years Resolution that I would enjoy keeping - you know how you always decide to be more organised, or more positive, or keep in touch with relatives more often, or study harder for your exams.. All very worthwhile but, on the whole, not particularly 'fun'.
I hate photos of myself, so you are only ever likely to see two.. my profile picture, and one day during the year will be one of myself. Not sure when that will be though. I also live in a very boring area of the world (Norfolk, England.. for those of you who don't know) so I had to come up with something good to photograph. In the end I settled on a rubber duck. I love rubber ducks, and I can think of a lot of funky, quirky places to put him, and my inner child loves making up little stories for him too.
What I'd like to know is.. why did we all start this project? Seems to me a lot of people on here are parents of young children.. and a lot of others are photographers already (and many are both..!) .. so why did you decide to start, and why have you kept going?
@cupcakey , a friend of mine from... a certain nerdy game which rhymes with "World Of Warcraft", said "I want to do this 365project next year, fancy doing it too?" and I said "Hrm, no idea how I'll manage it, but sure why not" and so I did.
Not very glamorous a reason I know...
Am really glad I started it though. S'been a fun year, and continues to be so even though I'm "finished"
I decided to do one because I take loads of photos anyway. (Since I got my SLR I've taken about 5000. It's been what, 2 months? XD Although, a lot were discarded and deleted... but still!) To find something different and interesting to take every day, especially as I can't really go outside to do it at the moment is a real challenge and I think it'll help me develop my skills etc.
Last year my friend tried to do this on facebook, didn't keep up with it, and kinda lost it. I saw it and thought "how awesome would that be to do?" I did a 30 day challenge last July so when I saw someone post this site on Jan 2nd, I joined immediately. Can't wait to do this all year long!
Myself, I wanted to do something just for me. I work full time, I parent a child with special needs, I serve on a non-profit board, and I love ALL of that, but I didn't have much left that was just for me . . . I love to take pics, but mostly take the "memory" type of family, friends, events, etc. I LOVE those . . . and am Shutterfly's best photobook customer! LOL! I never had much reason to take "art" though . . . and I wanted some motivation and a challenge that would inspire me to stretch my legs a bit and take some photos for photo's sake . . . ANYWAY, I love it here and even though I fall behind from time to time I've kept up pretty well. Saturday will be my 100th shot!!!!! I have no technical skills or photographic expertise to speak of, but I think I have an adequate eye and have learned a lot here and by forced trial and error . . .
Best advice, don't take it too seriously or it will become a chore . . . just have fun!!!!!
Erm, I was sat on the sofa on New Years Eve, end of 09, start of 10, and quite a few people I knew began to sign up, and I'd seen someone on Facebook do it, so I impusively decided to take a photo and I've been at it ever since!
@katiegc24
I'm new here as well, and also from Norfolk :)
I started the project as a friend on Facebook did the project last year and it really inspired me. I like taking photos anyway, and like the challenge of finding something new and interesting every day!
I joined, cos I saw someone talk about it on walford web, and I need something to be obsessed by or I'll go nuts, so I joined this, and yes from the beginning of the year it has now become my obsession...I love taking photographs anyway, am looking to invest into a new lens hopefully when I get my student loan through :D And seen as though I pretty much took a photograph everyday last year, i thought it would be interesting to fill last years up by looking through all the photos I have taken and looking for the ones with the right dates to match the days, its a challenge but fun. I'm going to try my hardest to just photograph animals (as this is what I love to photograph) but there may be odd days when I cant find a animal to photograph so will be something random lol
A great excuse to take pictures every day! I take a lot of pictures anyway, but they just sit on my hard drive and are never seen by anyone. Why not share?
I am just getting started at this as well, and would love some new friends :)
For me it's a mixture of a diary and a way of trying to understand my fairly cheap, easy to use camera a bit better. I was given a proper kick up the bum to do this when I went out on New Year's Eve and for once remembered to take my camera...but then forgot to take it out of my bag! I really am the most amateurish of amateur photographers but hope during this year I will become inspired to be creative.
It's also a great way to meet some other like minded people xx
I`ve seen the link on a socializing website,on someone`s profile, checked it out,and bang! My "passion" resurrected. It was somewhat spontaneous.I even bought a DSLR about two weeks later (with the money I had saved for a motorcycle!)...so,yeah,that`s my story.Life`s so random sometimes.
I heard of the idea back in college a few years ago and randomly decided one day in 2010 that I wanted to start one. My dad gave me his old 35mm film camera when I was about 10 years old and ever since then, I've been crazy about photography. I took multiple classes in college and in all honesty, should have probably gone to art school for it. So, after a few years of taking very few pictures, I figured it would be great to make myself take them every day. Another reason, my sister @ericaleigh017 and I are really close and we don't live in the same city anymore, so we started this project together for a way to be a part of each other's lives even though we don't live together anymore. I think i have too many reasons... haha.
I decided to start the 365 to challenge myself to be more vulnerable with my photography. I'm always striving to please my clients and often forget how important it is to please myself as well. The goal of this 365 (which I just realized from responding to this post that YES I actually have a solid goal) is to please myself. I'm letting my inner creativity flow and we'll see where it takes me!
I started because I just love photography and it's something I've been doing for a while, and it's just nice to have people see what you actually care about doing.
I've almost quit loads of times but I've always kept going cause I know it will feel amazing when I hit photo 365
Welcome, Kate!
I'm here because my husband challenged me as kind of a joke. I'm like you and hate being in front of the camera--so anything camera related used to send me screaming from the room. However, after picking one up, I found out being behind the camera wasn't bad at all--in fact, I've come to love it and he's since dropped out of the Project!
I'm new as well. I thought that this project would help with self-discipline, and would give me a great photo journal of the year. Rather than try to be a great photographer, I thought that I would take a photo that describes one significant part of each day. By December 31st I will have 365 individual memories of my life in 2011!!!
i actually started last april...i had decided i wanted a good camera to take good pictures of my knitting....i just started to play around with my sony p&s and thought, i want a dslr
got my bonus at work and it was burning a hole in my pocket apparently....
a few friends of mine online were doing something similar to this (not on here) and i thought it would be a great way to figure out my camera and see how my photography would progress over a year's time
unfortunately, i just stopped after about 5 months (and stupidly deleted my account!)
i decided as a new year's resolution i was going to start it up again, and this time follow through
i knit a lot and i live in the woods near a lake, so i always have some sort of something to take a picture of
@eyebrows you're a wow'er ?? i have a slightly (heavily) addicted son on there lol, my eldest daughter used to mega obsessed with it, but work gets in the way now, thankfully lol. now other daughter's bf is on there, but not so much. my son, is on there from when he wakes .... hmm well lets just say he's on there a lot haha.
kate ... i had a friend who joined here early last year and promptly quit, thats how i found out about 365 ... later in the year i decided it was a pretty cool idea and thought it would be a good way to get me back into photography again, and it worked ;-)) yay
i started more with the idea of a diary of a year, then quickly realized i lead a very boring life, so i just started to show the things i find interesting, or the world the way i see it. now i am hopelessly hooked!
One of my friends is a photographer and started posting pictures on facebook from her 365 project. I love photography as well so I checked it out. At first I nearly deleted my account because I didn't have any friends, but that QUICKLY changed. My cousin, my aunt, and another friend joined and everyone on this side is super friendly so I made lots of new friends. This is one of my favorite things to do and I'm enjoying every single day!
I was looking up photography projects in December because I was bored and wanted to do some fun stuff with my pictures, and this stood out to me. I hope I can keep up with it all year!
for me it was simply the joy of taking pictures and making myself use the camera that I purchased and not let it be another one of the items I just had to have to have it sit in the case. now I take it with me everywhere everyday, but with all the talent here, it sometimes is hard to find a good enough photo to put up, but it is fun and challenging. And it does give you a purpose to take pictures,
Welcome!
I started because I love to take pictures and a friend of mine told me about it. She always had her camera with her and she explained that she documented each day of the year with one photo so that at the end of the year she could go back and have a representation of 365 days. I loved the idea and now I'm addicted!
I am also a new mom with a 7 month old baby, but I try not to use my many photos of him for this project. In fact, I try not to photograph people at all if I can help it for 365 Project. I try to challenge myself to look for other things and it causes me to notice things that perhaps I would not have noticed otherwise. What I really like the most is that it is an artistic outlet for me and a way to express my creative side. But I also like to be able to post a story about the photo if I want and it's fun to have people to share that with.
Good luck to you! I'm sure there are things you can find to photograph if you just put your mind to it. :)
I take pictures of everything I see. I don't have a purpose for many of them when I take them. For Christmas I made a photobook for a family member of places we've been together and realized the value of all these photos that get put on a storage drive and forgotten.
This is another outlet I can share the photos I take. That was what I thought on day one. But I'm already learning new ways to take pictures from the people on here! A valuable resource I hope to give back to.
I joined because I really need the discipline and I figured that picking up the camera every day would help me to learn more about it (the camera, that is, not discipline). It remains to be seen how long my newfound discipline will last...but I'm already addicted.
I came across photos from my cousin's husband who now lives in Latvia.
I live here in Australia and it was fascinating to see images of my father's homeland.
By following others I am also getting to see where they live too - the different hues of the sky, architecture are all fascinating. It has also sparked my interest in photography.
Last year I headed overseas and the passion that I use to have for photography returned so I was looking for something to keep that passion burning... this seemed to be the perfect thing. Only a week in and I am loving it and once again I am seeing things as photo ops instead of just backgrounds.
@taidster An ex-WoWer now, thankfully. I only started playing it because my former Counter Strike buddies all migrated to it, so I went along just to hang with them still. Gradually they all drifted so I stopped too, because: it's boring as hell!
I was a damn fine rogue though. World's Greatest, some said. Ain't that so, @cupcakey ?
Not very glamorous a reason I know...

(apart from @mizikei anyway..)
It can be quite picturesque here.. but mostly just a lot of very flat fields : /
I am just getting started at this as well, and would love some new friends :)
