I keep coming across photo posts today wherein the photographer states their photo looks better in the enlarged version with the black background. In every case, I would have to agree. The enlargement doesn't work completely on my computer (does it for anyone?) but what are everyone's thoughts on changing the Project 365 background colour to black instead of light blue? Could this be done? Is there a reason for having light blue I'm not aware of?
I think the blue is easy on the eyes for viewing everything. It would be too busy and cluttered looking as well as hard on the eyes to view everything with a black background all the time so I think having a black background for when you view someone's photo larger to be sufficient.
Depending on what colors are in your picture, the blue can actually detract from it. A neutral grey or black is best to not detract from the colors in the picture. Well this is what I learned in all my design classes anyways :)
Hm, I think black might be a little harsh in photos that have a lot of light in them - the darker the background, the less-clear light colours are (and vice versa). I think the best theoretical option would be a 50% grey.
it is like matting a photo... everyone has different needs... have you considered just adding a frame to your image... all you really need is 10-15% around the image to 'trick' the eye...
oh... and various things do or do not work on this site for me from time to time... ever tried viewing it in a windows with chrome or old IE... fails badly.... but generally it works...
I like it as it is! To me, the blue seems...idk...friendlier? And if you really want to see things with a black background, you can always enlarge them and do it that way! I think that having the site black may make it too dark and it wouldn't match the logo =p but yeah, just my 2 cents :)
it's partially for web design reasons i'd imagine. if you go through the internet you'll notice that a black website is very rare. black backgrounds and white text make the eyes work harder, so it's not good in the long run if you use this site often! it does make images stand out, but it's not good for the plethora of text that's also here.
I prefer black or grey.. and quite a lot of photographer websites have black to show off their images much better. Its effective and fairly traditional too, I still use black on any books of prints. I think for a photography website its great, and this of course, is one.
I would prefer the image to be in the center of the page tho, the clutter is still the worst for me, cant get used to it!
i have a theory about why some people are sending us to flickr to view their 365 image there as it "looks better" .... i think its the white background .... and as it only seems to happen for some, i guess it is like some have said already, that it depends on the photo, so black white blue or grey, there will probably always be some that look better a different way.
if users are worried about it, they can link to flickr if they have it there and it looks better, OR can simply suggest it looks better viewed large ie black background, or if you're an ace user, you get the link url for the original size, and can post that, which i have done myself ... it provides a direct link to the jpg, ie a white background
Going back to the layout that 365 had a few months ago would help make the images pop more. That way they're the focus instead of all the text that makes the current layout right side heavy and confuses the eye as where to look first.
I'd have to say I'm a fan of the cheery blue and the 365 logo. I think it gives the site an exciting and jumpy personality that would be taken away if it were replaced with black. But since we now have the option to enlarge a photo against a black background, maybe we could put in the description of the photo "full view please" so people know that it looks better against the black.
@clarissajohal No the enlargements on black are not full :( ...He could keep the blue but change the white. Most photos are better on black. Or the option could show full photo. It is for sure a problem with having your photo "look its best" on this site.
I would LOVE to have it in black! I love looking at the enlarged version because the photos usually look more stunning in that. The trick is to press f11 so you can view it in full screen (the photos then won't look cropped off). :) I hope Ross considers changing it. :)
Most pictures do look better on black background. I chose black or dark grey to my blog who have little or no text and more pictures. I also participated in a site of amateur photographers in Hebrew where only the part of the picture was in black. In fact one could choose between whit and black and several tones of grey.

I'm sure it could be coded where people could choose how the site looks (at least to them personally), and have a few different color schemes.

We do? I've seen it mentioned a few times but somehow I can't figure out how to view full
and here I prided myself on learning by randomly clicking buttons (not so good at 2am when you're the only person at the radio station)
