Trouble with color in uploaded photos

January 8th, 2011
I typically edit my photos in photoshop. I have been noticing that the color quality I think looks good in photoshop or as a jpeg on my computer never looks as nice when i upload them to 365. They seem more washed out and muted (viewing them on the same computer).
Am I doing something wrong? Any ideas?
Thanks!

Mine are the same. I've started to upload them to Flickr as well as that seems to retain the colours.

When you upload here the server does a thing called "resampling" the image, which is what's responsible for the colour change. It makes sure the image is the right size for the site (550px longest edge) and reduces the filesize too.

@eyebrows hmm, so do you think the colour will change LESS if we size our pics at 550 before uploading ?? i have a terrible habit of uploading the full size photo lol, and that can be over 10MB at times, bit of a waste of server space for ross too i guess, maybe i should not do that hehe.

i do resize for flickr, to approx 1.1MB each because i don't pay there and its limited etc. and some of mine do look better there. so do you think i should here too ?

I just re-saved my latest photo at 550px longest side and re-uploaded and it seemed to help. I think I will resize them all before uploading from now on. Thanks!

Aside from the resampling, you may also be experiencing color management issues. Your computer and/or photoshop may be using a different color space than web applications. Check your color management settings in both PS and for your operating system.

Generally you will want to be using sRGB to maintain consistent colors from the computer to the web.

It's actually the color space you have photoshop set to export with, my guessing is that you are on a mac, files need to be in the sRGB format not the CMYK space.

@cohare @taidster pre-resizing actually doesn't make a difference, sadly, see here for the details http://365project.org/eyebrows/365/2010-09-24

@taidster Uploading 10MB though, tut tut tut, bad form!

@eyebrows aaahhh wow that is different hey. and yeah i'm gonna make an effort to only upload mid sized photos, i'm just usually too lazy to resizse twice, ie once for here and then once for flickr lol.

@Scrivna i definitely never save in cmyk, but then i've only really had a visible difference for one of my uploads here, and it was quite minor.

Here's a question for you. Is your camera color profile set to Adobe RGB or sRGB? If it's set to aRGB (Adobe) color profile and you are not converting it to sRGB, then the colors won't look good online. aRGB is a printing color profile that doesn't look good on the web. Just check to see if somehow your have your setting on aRGB by mistake. I have mine set that way but I convert to sRGB once I am done with my editing and then I post online in that color profile. That's all I can think of... occasionally it will still happen to me where an image looks better in Photoshop than it does online but in those cases I think I am not resizing properly and sharpening for web.

haha I just now read Ross's response, almost the same as mine.

@Steve, it's fine and even preferable to edit in aRGB especially for printing as long as one converts the profile to sRGB afterwards. The colors will be saved. The lab I use will print in either color profile but not all labs will do that - so this way I am covered either way. As long as you remember to convert to sRGB after editing it's all good. Back when I was shooting in sRGB I sometimes used to get awful "banding" in my sky shots and that doesn't happen in the aRGB color space, something I see as a huge benefit and worth that extra step.

Thanks so much everyone! I will look at all your suggestions. I think I may have found my big problem. I use photoshop and it was set to "desaturate at 20%"upon exporting. I have no idea why!?...but it explains a lot of my problems uploading pictures! I just re-posted and I think it looks much more like the original.
Thanks again!!

Just found this thread when looking for an answer as to why my radiant picture isn't, when uploaded to here!

I am using a mac and, as far as I can tell it is set to RGB.

I am using aperture, and my glorious orange flower is a dull brown? Why?
