Lightroom Help Please

January 11th, 2011
Well here goes, let me see if I can explain this well enough....

I am using Lightroom 3, I can see the photos from different collections on the film strip down the bottom, but some of them have a question mark on them and if I click on the photo it brings it up on the large main screen but says "the file named DSC....is offline or missing". Therefore not allowing me to do anything with the photo. What the ???? have I done, please help :)

You moved it outside of Lightroom (as in, you used windows explorer to move it) and now LR doesn't know where it is. You can point Lightroom to the image, or remove it from the library and re-import it from the correct location.

@jinximages This is what i thought, but how do I find where they are? I had a guy come to do some work on the computer last week (grrr) and now even recently imported pics are missing. I don't often use this particular computer as I now have a seperate one just for our photos. But there are thousands of pics missing! Thanks jinx I knew you would answer my question :)

Easiest way to start finding them is go back into Lightroom, find one with a ? on it, and note down the filename that it says it can't find. Then click Start (the Windows start button down bottom left) and Search for that filename, see if it's there or not.

@jinximages @eyebrows Ok,so we have found alot of the photos, what should I do now to either get them back in lightroom or to get lightroom to recognise where they are? Sorry,I know I'm frustrating, lol.

When you click on an image in Lightroom, you should get the option to "point" LR to its new location. Alternatively, remove it from Lightroom and reimport it (import photos from disk).

Could we copy all the pics onto an external hard drive(from a file) and import them into Lightroom onto the new computer? Or would you need to do it one photo at a time?

I'm not sure what you mean exactly by the "from a file", but otherwise, yes - you can do a bulk import.

@kirsty You need to synchronize your folders. I don't know where you find this in 3 but it should be fairly obvious. This searches your computer for all the 'missing' files and corrects the file path.

This same thing happened to me yesterday and I found out that my external hard drive was no longer connected. Once I plugged it back up, lightroom was restored.
