Watermarks?

January 12th, 2011
Seeing a lot of these on peoples' photos.

Is there a history of images being stolen from 365 Project, or are members just being extra careful?

just like any photos online there is a risk of it being stolen... so people have had their image stolen but I would not say it is any worse than flikr, facebook, ect... as always... watermark if it helps you sleep at night... so me.. eh... taken 'em, stealing my photos will not make you look any better...

It's a general and sensible approach to somewhat protecting the photos we publish. Not a 365 project website problem as such.

@vikdaddy Yes and to be fair if I was posting images as good as Vik's on here I would watermark too... I still giggle at that 'beware of trains' from last week... makes my day....

Mine started as a joke meant for a photog friend of mine who calls me Unnie and she said it looked cute so I kept it. It's not so much to protect them but I dunno, I kinda like it there.

I started adding mine to protect my photos on facebook and flickr so they just ended up on the ones here. I have tons of pics of my kids out there and don't want them to end up on someone's website. kwim?

it's not that hard to put a watermark anyway. after post processing through lightroom, it can automatically put one on the corners for you when you export from raw to jpg.

@infonographist but great water marks take time. @jinximages how long does it take you to water mark yours? I know Rambo from another forum and he takes almost as long to watermark as he does to edit (NSFW) see here

Forgive my greeness on the topic, but are the watermarks those little signatures we sometimes see on the bottom of images? If so, can't users simply crop them out?
January 12th, 2011
@bobg , Yup and Yup. if you wanna take the time to edit it out....
watermarks are like laws.. only keep the honest , honest and the lazy even more so.... Im one of the lazy ones.. not the honest ones..! lol

@bobg - some people put signatures on their photos in the corner and yes most of those could be either edited or cropped out if you could be bothered but proper watermarks are across the middle of the photo and are much more difficult to remove.

I've always watermarked mine, it's just out of habit. Sure I worry about them being stolen all the time but maybe that's b/c I'm in the business as a portrait photographer and I want to prevent them from being used by clients until they are purchased - so out of habit I go about watermarking everything.

I had someone stealing my pictures and claiming they were their own. granted, it's not like they got any monetary compensation by taking credit, it WAS just facebook, but it's just the principle of the thing. And I have heard stories about kids pics being stolen and used in ads. If you want my kid in you ad, contact me. Names in my watermark :)

@icywarm I have two watermarks on my images - one is in the middle and hard to see, and the other is usually in a corner and easier to see. Mostly i use Lightroom to apply them, but often have to muck around to get the colour and opacity exactly right - sometimes it takes a while, and sometimes I don't care too much and just plonk it on there. But if I'm creating something for a gallery or my website, it can take an hour just to get the watermark how I want it. Just depends on the image. But if I just want to protect, and don't care too much about the artistic side of it, I just smack a big one on there - that's mostly for client galleries when I have a feeling the client will screencapture and get them printed (which is a lot of the time).
