Travelling with my Camera

January 12th, 2011
So I'm planning on taking my Camera with me to Paris next month, but since I will be spending most of my time in theme parks and Maths lectures I'm wondering whether it's worth it.
The reason I want to take it in the first place, is because I get to go down to the coast, in order to cross the channel, and I am sure I would get some amazing shots.
But I don't want to risk losing it, breaking it or getting it stolen whilst in Disney Land.

Thoughts and tips would be greatly appreciated guys.

Thanks :]

I couldn't imagine not taking my camera to Paris! When my husband and I took a vacation to Mexico last summer I brought my camera along, but when I knew we would be in unfriendly camera situations (like swimming) I left it in the in-room safe. Would that be an option for you?

@foursides same here! there is just so many amazing things I could picture!
Well it's a study trip with school, so I should think they'll have a safe in the room.. but whether we'll be allowed to use the safe is another matter, because you usually have to stick a deposit on it, don't you?

I have never had to give a deposit for use of an in room safe. All the ones I've (or husband he travels a lot but within the USA) have used you digitally reset the code to your own while you are using it. Could you call the hotel you are staying in and ask?

Good idea :) There should be a meeting at school which covers all of this soon hopefully.

Another idea I had was putting some sort of lock on my suitcase and leaving my camera in there... do you think that could work?

i didn't take my 'big' camera to paris, just a pocket-size p&s, and i regretted it so much! i was glad to have a camera, but there are photo opportunities literally everywhere, and i wished i had my better one.

The best picture you ever took is the one you didn't. Bring your camera, 'cause you know you'll regret it later.

I couldn't imagine not traveling without a camera!

I don't see why they wouldn't let you use the safe! I'm sure a lot of people are bringing stuff that should also be locked up... extra money, phones, computers, jewelry, who knows what else. If there isn't one in the room, I would imagine the front desk would have a safe you could leave stuff in. I'd say it'd be unreasonable for the school just to expect nobody to bring anything of value and that the safe was off limits...

Somehow I have to persuade my Mum into letting me take my camera. She seems dubious about the whole thing.
I think if she knew there was a safe to put it in, she would be fine with it all...
As for your question Heidi, My school is like that. It's because we're a bunch of 15 year old students in Disney Land and they don't trust us whatsoever.
I'm really hoping I can take my camera.. even if I only get a few photos.. it'll be so worthwhile!

insure it and take it, it can't be that expensive.

@vikdaddy GREAT IDEA.

@rainbowskies What!! Not take a camera to Paris, one of the most beautiful cities!! I am with Vikdaddy. Otherwise, I would pony up for a new, relatively cheap P&S to carry around with you, just so you can document your trip. FEx... http://www.walmart.com/ip/Kodak-Black-C183-Bundle-acc-kit/15268626

Insuring it is a great idea!

It may not cover cameras, but I thought home owner insurance covers things like this. When you're living on campus in college, my belief was that your parents insurance would take care of a loss of a laptop or expensive device. Never had that happen, fortunately.

I second taking your camera. I look back at my school trips and wish I had taken more pictures! That was with film. Take it, watch your surroundings, and it should be fine.
