New Computer Needed

September 30th, 2018
My computer no longer works. What should I look for in a new computer. I would like a laptop that runs Windows. No Mac or Linux systems please.

@cirasj I have no idea but when I bought my laptop a couple of years ago I said that I needed one that can run Photoshop and Lightroom. Of course he suggested an expensive one and when I told him I couldn't afford it he (unexpectedly) found one that was much cheaper. It has worked perfectly every day.

Full HD screen with as close to 100% reproduction of the sRGB colour space as possible, fast processor and lots of internal memory (RAM) 8GB is a bare minimum. 16GB i OK (unless you shoot with a Nikon D850 or a Sony A7r then you need even more :-)

I just bought a Lenovo Think Pad T580. It replaced my last Lenovo, which lasted 5 years. I got 1 TB of storage because of the photos. Plus a solid state drive. It was pretty maxed out.

I got a Lenovo ideapad 110, 64 bit and 1TB storage. I am extremely happy with it.

Grandson built my wife and I desktops, set up for gaming, but works well for photo processing and my programming needs.

Maybe ask about a built-in memory card slot/reader...When I recently bought a new card reader because my pics wouldn't download anymore, the tech said a lot of computers have memory card slots built-in nowadays...

@ingajohansson @helstor @danette @ludwigsdiana @byrdlip @sandrajo Thank you for the information. I am using someone's computer since mine is not operational. I have lost some photos that I took on vacation in Hawaii and am trying to find a way to recover them.

@cirasj Good luck on the recovery. I hope that it was the computer that died, as opposed to the hard drive, that failed. If you get a new machine, _maybe_, just _maybe_ you can have the hard drive put into the new machine and all the files will be there. I had all my images on an external drive which had been a gem for many years, then one morning, it would not respond. Grandson tried doing some recovery, but no luck. Some of them were on my raid drive, some were on CD, from film/slides. Now I have them on my raid drive and Amazon Photo (a slow process for the ones found)

Good luck

@byrdlip I do have a cable that allows me to transfer data from my hard drive to another computer. My hard drive stopped spinning during the transfer. I do have my RAW files backed. I just lost the edited photos. I have an external 1TB and a 2TB back up storage systems that I keep my files on. I use the 2 TB storage for my RAW files.

@ameliastone I do have a cable to do that. Data cannot be extracted off a non spinning disk.
