It would be nice to share hints and tricks about these cameras. Everyone on here seems to use a Nikon or Canon. Feel free to leave your comments about your camera, what you use, and how you use it!
I have a A-230 with the standard 18-55mm lense. I received it from my wife as a Christmas gift. I also received a Kenko UV filter. I plan on getting the 55-200mm telephoto lense shortly.
Sony a230 for me :D I have the stock 18-55mm, and a newly acquired 50mm f/1.8 (which I love). Very satisfied with my Sony! This camera was my intro into dslr cameras, and it is so user friendly.
Sony A100 with a 28-200 lens. Since I had a Minolta Maxxum, I waited until they had a dslr with a Minolta mount. I've never used the other lenses I have, because the lens that I bought with the camera has been so versatile.
Hi I have an A100 with 18-70mm a wide angle 12-18mm, Minolta telephoto 70-300 and also a Minolta 50mm Prime lens. Saving my pennies for Minolta 70-200 mm 2.8 SSM (G) lens. I also have a Sony A55.
Since I started with my BA through OCA I have found many faults but more qualities with the Sony. I really like it.
Do you think the Sony cameras are under rated, under advertised, or just less quality? Why is it that so many less people use Sony Cameras? My wife did a lot of research before she bought my camera and found the Sony A-230 to be the best camera for the money.
This is comparing it to a Canon Rebel XS and Xti, Pentax K2000, Olympus E-Volt 410 and 520, and Nikon D80.
The one thing I have found is that the "Sony" brand lenses have a hefty price tag attached to them. My mother says that's because they are designed by Carl Zeiss. I don't know how true that is? I do know that Zeiss lenses are extremely expensive.
I have a Sony A100 with a 18-200 lens. I had looked through the top cameras at the time but settled on the Sony. I've never regretted it. :) @dsdsnodgrass I've heard that Sony's are hard to buy off brand lenses for, and I agree their brand lenses seem very expensive. Perhaps that hurts the reputation?
If anyone has a favorite off brand lens that would fit the A100, I'd love to know.
I have a Sony A200 and love it!! My husband did a lot of research on cameras and this one was the best for the money we had, plus we had Minolta Maxxum lenses from and old SLR I had that I loved!! I generally use the 70-210 on it because I take a lot of pictures at my daughter's soccer games. I also have 35-70 but don't use that as often. Both of my lenses are Minolta Maxxum. Hubby brought me home a 50mm Macro Minolta lens to play with and love it. I love my camera and the ease in which I can use it.
@dsdsnodgrass Sony and Zeiss do have an exclusive partnership for autofocus lenses. That's some nice glass, but each lens is $1,000+. The other Sony lenses are not Zeiss, though, and are less expensive. A lot of them are based on older film lenses from Minolta.
On my Maxxum, I had a Maxxum lens and an off brand. The off brand would not work with the Sony, obviously, the Maxxum did. The off brands do tend not to work with the Sony.
It so good to see other Sony Alpha users. I have a A380 which I am very happy with. Came with the two kit lenses and I have bought a 50mm macro lens for it as well. Must admit I would love to try the new A55 @dsdsnodgrass Which country do you live in, I have bought my lens off a Australian website which ships out of Hong Kong and they have lenses at great prices, and are super quick on delivery. http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/store/browse.asp?idCategory=9&brand=7
I'm using the Sony A330. Its my first DSLR. I love it so far. Right now I just have the two lenses it came with, 18-55 and 55-200, but would really like to get a macro lense.
Can we talk filters for a moment? Through my "research" Hoya seems to be #1 in filters. Does brand make a huge difference? Or, do you get what you pay for here? The Hoya HD filters look intriguing. They are a little salty as far as price. What do you think? What are necessary filters for you and why?
Can anyone let me know other than the 350, which Alpha got live view and can flip up ? but I heard the A700 is the Sony Flagman camera, dont wanna waste money other than the 700 ? Any suggestions ? Sometimes shooting from below is just so hard to my body ~ might want live view with it. So what are the equivalent cameras to A700 and A350 now ?
I have a sony a55, which I am really enjoying. More compact than my previous sony, the a300. @ijuin I'm not sure of all alphas that have live view, but the new models, a33/a55 and a580 do. There is supposed to be a replacement for the a700 out in July or later. These cameras have somewhat less features than the a700, but probably take better pics due to autofocus and high ISO availability. The a580 & a33/a55 are probably a step above the a350, esp with the newer tech.
I have an a850 and a350 24-70 lens and 2 kit lens as well as asony prime 50 love them all was looking at anikon when I was looking to buy my first slr camera but went with the Sony and not regretting it at all
@pengu1n Karen: Are you still loving your a55? That is the camera that I will be buying in a couple of weeks. I am new to photography and would love any advice you can give me on this camera.
I just started my project 365. I love my a55. I use the standard lens but just got a Sony 55-300mm F/4.5-5.6 zoom. Love my a55. I'd like to get an off-camera flash and a macro lens or see if filters will do the trick. It's been awhile since anyone posted on this discussion topic but I hope there are still some Sony users here. I didn't see where you could list your camera--maybe with the paid membership.
Hello friends. I have a A65 now and gave my A290 away. My main lenses are Sony 16-50mm f2.8, Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 70-300mm usd and sometimes Sony 30mm f2.8 macro. My beloved prime Sony 50mm f1.8 is broken now.
My a300 is broken, so i'm back to using my a100, and I dream of getting a used a700. I mostly shoot with a beercan and a quantaray 28-90 that has a little switch to make it macro. That's a great used lens for the $$.

Instead of the 55-200, I'd encourage you to look into a legacy Minolta 70-210 f/4 "Beercan" on eBay. I loved that lens until I got my 70-200 G.
hooray! ahh I want those telephoto lense too :)
agreed with Rebecca on the fact that its user friendly!

To see available lenses for the Alpha mount, ratings, and reviews, a great website is the dyxum forums at http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/index.asp
