First Gig!!

January 15th, 2011
Some of these photos were taken in a little local eclectic shop...I sent some of them to the owner of the shop, and he asked me if I would shoot some photos for his new website tomorrow! I'm so excited, I just had to share!! Being a hobbyist studying to make this a career, this feels like a "big break" to me :)

@sdpace
Those are some really awesome photos! Now, of course, comes the big question: how much are you charging the store owner for your photos?
January 15th, 2011
@jasonbarnette Thank you! I told him I would do 2 hours of shooting and up to 8 hours of necessary editing at no charge, just to have my name on it. He offered me $100 in store credit (I LOVE a lot of his stuff), so there ya go! :)
This is the first thing I'll have my name on, and him being a small business (3 stores in our local metroplex), I think the name credit alone will go a long way. Of course, no one else will get their work gratis after this!!

What would you charge?
January 15th, 2011
@sdpace
For those photos of a small business? I probably would have charged just what he offered: $100 store credit. I would normally charge $200 an hour for photos like that.

The problem is that, as a career photographer, people with a camera and a great eye for photography like you keep doing work for free and it's absolutely killing the professionals. I made a mistake of shooting photography for my university's athletics department for six months hoping they would pay me in the end, and I got nothing. I spent $10,000 on new equipment and had to eat all that costs.

Your photography is always worth more than free. When you offer to shoot photos for free, even to get your name out there, you are only promoting other businesses, newspapers, and magazines to look for free photography. Pretty soon, professional photographers will be out of a job.
January 15th, 2011
@jasonbarnette Well I'm definitely charging moving forward...I'm an aspiring professional (in school now) and I don't want to be out of a job before I can even get one! This is my first time being asked to shoot something outside of family and friends, and even those requests are limited because I'm so new at this. Plus, I appreciated the fact that they let me take photos in my store, just because I told them I'm a student.
January 15th, 2011
@sdpace Very true. At first, you are just so grateful that you ask someone "Hey, can I take a photo of you while pointing my camera like a gun at your face?". I just always caution new photographers not to start off offering their services for free, cause once you get a reputation around town of being "that photographer" you'll never earn money in that town. That's why when I graduated I couldn't get a job as a photographer and I had to move :(

What area of photography interests you most so far?
January 15th, 2011
@jasonbarnette This is in a little town north of me..I live in one of THE highschool football cities in Texas, and come this fall, I will have a plan for selling my sports shots. :) I love photographing sports. Soccer is my favorite.

I don't think I'm interested too much in portraits...fences and birds don't care much if they don't look perfect in a photo, but I know people do. Maybe later down the line I could do some of that....but for now, I think my photos are a little more artsy, even when I shoot the sky and fences and plastic buddha statues.

I've been doing a lot of macro lately, which I really like...but I feel like I'm just passing the time until soccer starts back up in March.

What is your favorite thing to shoot? Do you have a business, or do you just freelance? I work full-time as a manager in a stressful office job...I can't wait to get out of there (More reason to charge for photos and time, eh!?) :)
January 15th, 2011
@sdpace Your photos are amazing. Congratulations on this next step. :)
January 15th, 2011
@sdpace Sports photography was my first passion! I loved how every game technically was the same, but it was also different. I shot every home game of every sport my university had in six months, so I shot thousands of photos.

I shoot freelance photojournalism for newspapers and magazines. I get just enough business to support myself, though I'll admit just barely. I shoot landscapes, nature, and animals just for fun. My favorite thing to shoot now is silhouettes (as you can tell from my photos).

I also love teaching photography. I'm not one of those photographers that wants to keep all my secrets to myself. Well, maybe a few, but I often teach photography skills and techniques.

If you want, check out my website and blog and lemme know what you think!

@jasonbarnette thank you so much for sharing your website. Your photos are gorgeous. I love the Blue Angels set. Amazing!

I shot a silhouette for today's photo, and yesterday I guess too. I love them. I think my favorite part of photography is contrast - whether it be colors contrasting, or objects contrasting....

I'm glad you ended up in such a beautiful part of the country - if there's anything I know...it's "A is A"....a thing is what it is. Your eyes make it different to you from how other people perceive it, but it's always the same actual thing. That's what makes our trade beautiful...we have a 3rd eye. :)
