Who Is A Las Vegas Local?

January 18th, 2011
I want to know what other Las Vegas locals photograph from day to day. My boyfriend works on the strip and I already went on photowalks on the strip two days in a row. Im burned out of the strip. I share a car with him so I can't randomly decide Im going to Hoover Dam today or anything like that because his shift is on call. Needless to say I am completely out of inspiration and ideas.

I'm not from Vegas, nor have I ever been there. But, I looked through your photos and had an idea. You've captured some really great classic areas of Vegas. Maybe you could shrink your scale a bit. Bring it down to the details. I'm sure there is oober detail and adornment everywhere! I'd love to see some macros of it all. Maybe try some perspectives too???

I'm going to Las Vegas in March for a wedding and have already been brainstorming for my trip. Good luck and keep up the great work! =)

crowd shots. plenty of ops for them at any time...
brides NOT being happy..
go up the top of Stratosphere , and other towers and take shots of the surrounding area.
golden nugget with old timers coming out of the doors..
any of the free acts they have inside the casinos.
some gambling action shots.. dice cards , slot machines.
some food shots...
mono rail.
and the most obvious shot of all, the Vegas sign..
the gondolas at the venetian ,
show girls smoking at the back of a hotel.
the roller coasters at Circus Circus.
try and stand in the middle of traffic and get a traffic shot.
places from films shot there.
Elvis marrying someone..
. ask if you can take photos of someones wedding and offer a disc for them allowing you to do it.

the line at town hall for wedding licenses .
stand at the end of the strip and photo the desert. then face the strip and shoot it.
old cars
new construction site
at different times of the day photo the same spot. and make a collage.
Hope some of these are helpful.

The neon sign museum! Can't think of what it's real name is... but lots of good photo opps there.

Maybe for some scenic stuff take a short drive out to Red Rocks & the visitor center?

lived in Vegas a few years, there are some nice options if you want to get out of the valley:

If you 2 ever do get the time, Hoover Dam is a nice trip, especially with the new highway completed. we were back visiting while under construction, offered up some nice shots. And, Lake Mead is a good stop on the way.

shorter drives would be Mt. Charleston, Red Rock, plenty of desert and mountain landscapes.

with a large and growing number of homeless and people down on their luck, lots of opportunity for some "street photos"

careful with the shots taken inside casinos, especially directly at the games or machines, they sometimes frown on that... although, might get some very interesting security guard shots from an experience like that.

the airport is a great place for people, crowds, etc. not to mention the planes, architecture, technology, etc. ... there is a large sports park, (if you drive away from the main action, down the strip, past the Luxor) softball, basketball, frisbee golf, etc., might offer up some good opportunities.

the strip can seem a little monotonous if you spend too much time just there. get away from it for a few days, then come back for a fresh new look. not to mention, different times of the day/night also. early morning sunrises, or late afternoon sunsets hit those many hotel windows with brilliant colors and mirrored images, to get away from all that neon.

have fun, will be following to see the results! and to get a sneak peek on some old stomping grounds.

rent a car and do the grand canyon for a long long day trip? This way you can stop by hoover damn as @datsyukian mentioned and can snap it both early morning and get a long exposure shot at night

@toast excellent point! definitely do it the way Weng said!

thanks @datsyukian
yeah i did that last year... drove from 6am to 2am the day after :)
IF you want a full itinerary then probably :
- Download the grand canyon info stuff onto your ipod
- Pack a tripod
- Start from Vegas
- Stop at Hoover Dam, take pictures, walk around
- Drive to Peach Springs, go to the counter and get a pass to go down to the canyon floor
- Drive to said floor (it helps if you have a 4WD but hey, I did it in a dodge charger). Walk around, take photos, go "Wow" but be careful of rattlesnakes
- Get back in the car, drive to the grand canyon
- Walk around, take lots of shots, cap it off with a sunset shot from the west of the southern rim
- Get back in your car, drive back - stop often for coffee breaks and to jump around to wake you up
- Stop, park your car at Hoover dam, take your tripod and take some long exposure shots
- Drive back to vegas

lol, awesome itinerary!
I "Wow'd" too much on our trip to Hoover Dam, and those damn Black Widows were sometimes worse than the snakes
I don't live anywhere near there now, but that is an excellent plan to follow. Make the most of your time, so as to optimize all the shots you can get, w/o missing the prime lighting conditions.
