buying a camera on a whim in the morning

January 19th, 2011
i have been posting random shots here i have taken with my cell and point & shoot. i have even kinda cheated a bit and bunched up a couple days in a row instead of one daily due to an injury which makes it tricky to get out much. it has also been forcing me to think of shots in different ways - not using a DSLR limits what can be done. it is kinda fun to say the least. Sadly, my main rig is well past its prime (D200), the housing is a bit rough, my 18-200vr lens has been melted in a spot and can't use the VR mode... its time to get a new toy, then get back to more shooting as my injuries allow me to get back to my craziness.

i have decided that i will probably go with a new D90 kit, or possibly a used D300s setup.

i will need to go with a vertical battery pack out of habit, and tempted to consider an eye-fi card as well. anyone think of which may be a better route between the two? or a different option? Nikon is the way i am going to go, with the flashes and other parts, it is really the only brand to go with for me.

Well, if the D200 still works, what's wrong with that? I still use a D1H, which is much older. And if you're considering a D300s, think seriously about the D7000 instead. It is critically better, I am told. That is what I am looking at for the money if I decide to ever get a new one.

+1 to this.

There's a review of the D7000 in the latest issue of Popular Photography magazine. And I can't find anyone who has said anything bad about it. If you already speak "Nikonese" and are familiar with the layout on their cameras... I would strongly consider a D7000 at the price point you're looking at.

just watched the video - quite impressive rig. it looks like the 7000 give better quality, but as odd as it sounds, the thoughts on buying brand new technology, something better will be out in just a couple months from what it seems. i just checked and they also have a d2x for $800 - much cheaper, and can also pick up a working 18-200 vr for price range i am wanting to stay in. i love my d200, but with over 100,000 on shutter count, and under rough conditions, i think its time to get a replacement before it dies when i need it the most. i am not too concerned with video factors, and a D2 would be the most durable option - i seem to void warranties, which is another reason a used route might be better - if i break it i won't feel as bad.

Holy crap, a D2x for $800?! Nice find, they still go for well over a thousand, if not more, usually. I was looking at those for a backup body, but couldn't find anything anywhere near my price range.

yeah, the rig is a bit rough looking, but that seems to be a lot like me, especially if i have to shoot before i have coffee. also, as long as there is no light leaks, and holds back water for the most part, that is a plus. i have even put duct tape on my 200 in a pinch before.

i know the D2 series is older, and not the latest and greatest in pixels, but i do like the durability they offer, and after blowing up a photo shot on an iphone to 18x24 (with help from photoshop)... is the latest technology the most crucial factor? my main editing laptop is a few years old and works fine.

Got my eye on the D7000 so good to hear that the reviews have been good!

Before making a purchase, check out http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebyside.asp

This is a great tool to see side-by-side comparisons of all your options. Only buy the D300s if you want to shoot video, because otherwise it is identical to the D300.

ended up going with a d90, 28-80 and 70-300 - also picked up a few other goodies - 2 flash softboxes to mount (somehow) to use with my sunpak 611's, battery grip, camera armor, other gadgets, and even a nikon lens coffee mug - i couldn't resist that one. i am thinking of picking up an eye-fi card to see how well it works with the d90
