sony A350 flash question

January 31st, 2011
hey folks, a friend of mine ask me to look into helping her find a flash for a sony A350. i know sony has a different hot shoe style than most systems, and that is all i know about them. i have seen a few on ebay, but they are off brand, but a good price. the guide number on them seemed pretty low, and i am curious if any of you guys either have a sony A350 or know of a decent name brand of off brand flash at a good price. not being up on the sony systems i would rather ask then just guess and lead her in the wrong direction.

i am not sure what she is planning on shooting mainly with it, so i am guessing a general purpose flash is what she would be looking for.

thanks.

@cchambers Look for comparatively normal power and full adjustment, if it's really bad out there for them there are a lot of adapters for hot shoes out there to change one brand to another or attach older flashes...

@killerjackalope that was going to be my next step - my concern with the adapter to normal hotshoe would be the loss of TTL which i can see being bad for her - she is not real experienced with photography, and was hoping not to scare her too much. i think a vivitar 285HV would be a good choice - lots of power and the HV would let it play nice with the low voltage for the camera and fairly easy to pick up on power and use - i have a couple older sunpak 611's that i play russian roulette with and just have several generic radio slaves so when they blow from voltage spikes i don't feel bad, and if it gets ugly i can always use them as a good backup weapon. for some reason the thought of high voltage and damage to electronics scares her.

I assume you have already looked at the two that sony have in their range. I have a sony A380 but do not have a flash. I am hoping to get either of these two for my next birthday. Any reason why you have not looked at these.

Found this website, it might help

@lynne3804 thanks for the link - i have not looked at the main sony flashes for a simple reason - she is wanting to go a more inexpensive route is my understanding, and those models seem to have a higher price tag than the route she is looking for. i am hoping she can find a more low cost TTL solution, u see nothing wrong with non TTL and learning settings, to me is a better route, and much more control, but that is my choice in flash, and she was hoping to go the TTL automatic method.
