Suggestion for Site...

February 3rd, 2011
Ross -- how much would it take to put a place on our profile pages where we can list where we live? I think that is one of the most common questions I ask myself, is "where does this person live, that they are getting these shots?"

Thanks for the great site! I'm learning so much - mostly about myself!
February 3rd, 2011
I second that. So we can gather more local get-togethers, that sounds like fun!
February 3rd, 2011
Here here! Geography is such a big element of most people's 365 project- it tells so much about them and their photos.
February 3rd, 2011
@Scrivna just so he sees this - i agree that where a person lives would be a great idea :)
February 3rd, 2011
There's nothing to stop you just writing it in your profile anyway. Now that profiles are displayed on every photo page, it'd therefore appear...
February 3rd, 2011
I think you're right. There's not many people from my country (I havent met one actually), and maybe it would be a goood opportunity to see, where all of the users are living.
February 3rd, 2011
My location is in my profile. It would be pretty simple for everyone to do that. I agree, it would be nice to know locations.
February 3rd, 2011
I find this idea somewhat ridiculous.
If people want others to know where he/she lives, they add that in on their profile. If not, they don`t.
Sorry, but my fear is that "365" will become "Facebook".This website should allways stick to photography, and not socializing. And friendships can still happen. But let`s NOT turn this website in a socializing website, where a location-info is mandatory. Then I would probably quit.

Ross ,don`t do it,I love the website the way it is !
February 3rd, 2011
@spaceman I have to agree with you. If people want to add that kind of info then they add it themselves to their profile page!
I have had fears of this turning into a facebook kind of place and I would hate to see that happen.
February 3rd, 2011
I completely disagree with @spaceman on this one. Many of the photos I find on this site are landscape photos based on location. I saw some storm photos yesterday and the user was from Australia. A user from Brazil the other day posted some warm weather photos cause it's summer down there.

I think having the person's location is very important for our photography. And anyone worrying about the 365 Project turning into Facebook need to step back and really take a look at the two sites. Do you really think this site is becoming like Facebook? Because if you do...I don't think you know what Facebook is.
February 3rd, 2011
@jasonbarnette

So you mean all of us would need to reveal where we live? What about the people who don`t want to? They would get banned?
February 3rd, 2011
And to add one more thing: this site is very much about socializing. If all you want is a place to post your photos, get a Flickr account.

This site is about posting a photo a day, sharing our stories about that photo, and learning from each other. That involves talking. That involves socializing.
February 3rd, 2011
@spaceman I agree too - I like the fact that its my choice what information I put out there... and where I live has very little to do with 365 or my photographs. 365 is very cool in the way we do chat but at the end of the day, the project is a personal one and I think location is only important to sticky beaks!!

And I disagree, this project isnt about socialising primarily. Its just a nice side-effect.
February 3rd, 2011
@jasonbarnette

I never said that there`s no socializing going on here. But hey,FlickR sounds more appropiate for your needs, because it has Geotagging!......
February 3rd, 2011
A thought off the top of my head. Perhaps we could put the location of the shot in our commentary for the shot (if we wanted the location of the photo to be identified). OR if the location of the shot was important.
February 3rd, 2011
My location is the first two words of my profile.
February 3rd, 2011
You can put on your profile at anytime where you live,, some people dont want to disclose that info though
February 3rd, 2011
What if there was an OPTIONAL feature for someone to enter their location, so that you could search by zip code or something to find fellow 365'ers near you? (or near a place you used to live, are interested in, etc)
February 3rd, 2011
Hmmmm .... I'm on the fence with this issue. I sometimes would like to know where photos are taken but even if there is a place for someone to enter the information, not everyone will do it. It is a personal choice and adding a separate box to house the info will take designated space on the server. I for one would not enter a location if my pics are taken someplace like home .... hmmmm .... maybe I would just type home but probably not. A different idea might be using tags but again not everyone wants to tag their photos.
February 3rd, 2011
Wow.. I didn't realize that this would cause such a flutter! I am certainly not saying that Ross add a mandatory field for such information on anyone's profile, but it would be awful nice to get together with other folks who live by me and go out as a group to do some photography, hiking day trips - that sort of thing. It's hard to find 365'ers in my area when the information isn't searchable! If you don't want people to know where you live, then by all means - don't fill it in.

February 3rd, 2011
I have my location right on my "About Me" section on my profile. I also tag all of my photos with "Michigan" so that people can find them if they are looking for other Michiganders.

Colleen, to find others from your area you can search your location and hope other people tag their photos. You can also start tagging your own photos so they can find you in a search.
February 3rd, 2011
@csievert --- Ok, I understand wanting to connect up with others in your area. That makes more sense. :-)
February 3rd, 2011
I just tried a search on Seattle and found one of my photos. It was not tagged but I had made a notation in the photo description. Try doing a search on just the city name.

You can start a discussion on this topic, using the city and was in the title. It should come up on a search.
February 3rd, 2011
@jasonbarnette @spaceman I'm sure that if Ross were to put the option in, he'd make it optional. No one should be forced to reveal their location on the internet.
February 3rd, 2011
I have my location in my profile. I would like to meet with others doing the project so I could get ideas and tips, I realize some people may feel this is a privacy issue, so an optional field would be best.
February 3rd, 2011
I haven't read through all of the comments but it's easy enough to put your location in your profile, that's all I did. If people want to say where they live put it there, if not, don't. Simple as that :-)
February 3rd, 2011
i have my area listed on my profile along with my facebook link, so if more discussion is wanted, it is available, because it seems this site is not set up for as much socialization, in the same way. i have had banter between people on here, and has been quite enjoyable, from folks from all over the world, which is one reason i am becoming addicted to this site, being able to discuss things with people from all regions. i am from columbus, indiana, usa, and would really enjoy meeting up with fellow photogs in the area when it gets warmer and i can walk again, go out shooting and the such. i think facebook is more suited for the side chatter than this site. just my thoughts.
February 3rd, 2011
Hey, paranoid people - stop slavering and listen! Just because a field is added for your location doesn't mean you HAVE to fill it in!

Some people want to put where they live - let them... If you don't want to, just leave that field blank! All that Colleen is asking for is the option to put it on your profile if you want to... What's so bad about that?
February 3rd, 2011
@eyebrows
Only the first couple of lines are displayed on every photo page, though, with a "read more" think to click through to that person's full profile - so, if you wanted it to appear there, I'm guessing you'd have to put it first in your profile, right?
February 3rd, 2011
@manek43509 yup, that's what I was thinking
February 3rd, 2011
everyone mentions their location in their profile or in the captions to individual pictures, I know I do. don't really need it as a separate option.
I like how the current profile section is so open-ended.
February 4th, 2011
I think it would be redundant. Most people who want everyone to know where they live have mentioned it in their profile. Those who prefer to keep their whereabouts secret shouldn't be forced to divulge it!
February 4th, 2011
I personally like knowing where a person is from because it is interesting to see how many different places are associated with this site and it really is a big part of someone's photos, especially if they shoot a lot of nature shots. I don't even think the original poster was trying to say it should be mandatory, because it shouldn't. You shouldn't divulge any info you don't want to. That being said, why be so secretive about it? Who cares if everyone knows what country or even state you live in? No one is asking for your actual address. No disrespect to anyone not wanting to supply the info, but I just don't understand why you would not want to share.

And I agree that having the feature would be redundant. You can easily put it in your profile for everyone to see.
February 4th, 2011
So, I agree -- people could put their location in their profile description - but they aren't search-able... So, unless I want to go through and open up thousands of people's profiles, I can't tell if there are any others that live in the area I live in. I was simply hoping that there could be a place added that would be entirely OPTIONAL to enter anything in for location. Nobody would be forced to do anything - you and I all know that Ross wouldn't force that upon anyone, even if I did want him to (And I DON'T, so please don't go putting words into my mouth)
February 4th, 2011
@csievert See what you started? ;) It's funny how the most innocent of comments can become controversial.
