Well theres many different things to consider. Price range, what you want to use it for, if you need video ability, if you are going to want to make large prints, etc. Narrowing down what you want to get out of a camera is the first step to buying one ( :

if you intend to be doing photography professionally and/or will be buying more lenses and stuff, definitely canon or nikon, i would recommend canon because they have a broader range or lenses, and cheaper lenses/cameras to start of with

how much do you want to spend?

@vikdaddy you're not going to piss someone off with a Hasselblad comment again are you? :)

@jcrowley40 Good memory! ;) No, it's serious question, budget is the first consideration.

@vikdaddy Completely agree. There's no point in even looking until you decide how much you're willing to spend. Features vary widely from price to price.

@vikdaddy @jcrowley40 Vikdddy & Jared are right budget comes first. Depending on whether it is $500, $1,000 or higher we will all give you different advice. One thing all of us will quickly tell you is that ultimately the lenses become more important then the body. (Fo example, I have two bodies and 4 - hopefully soon to be 5 lenses).

This can get a pricey hobby quickly. Although, there are some great shots on this site taken with simple point and shoots and camera phones. (and the reverse is also true).

Canon 500D I think then, but I use Canon so I can only vouch for them. Nikon is probably just as good, but I don't know what the equivalent is.
