New Camera

March 16th, 2010
I currently have a Nikon D40x and I really do love it. But I'm looking to upgrade to a new camera. I wanted to know what everyone had and why you like or dislike it. Any help you all can give me would be so appreciated. I'm really looking to improve my photography skills so I want something that'll help me do that! :)

Are you wanting to stay with Nikon so you can keep your lenses?
: )

I have a D40x. Why upgrade? I also have my downgrade camera, which is a 9 yr old Pro D1H with 2.74mp. Again, why upgrade? If I had the Money, I'd be firing off a D700, but... Anyway, spend the money on some add'l lenses. That is an investment. A good fast prime lens, etc. will blow away an expensive camera with junk on it. Think about what you shoot. If you shoot architecture, a nice 16mm architecture lens is phenomenal. The Nikon 12-24 UltraWide Zoom. Nice! 50mm 1.4 Prime. Better than a new camera any day!

Get some new Software. NIK Color Efex pro is amazing. Noise Ninja, we all could use it here and there, etc, etc, etc.

Until the Shutter has flipped it's last shot (I think the D40x does 100k shutter snaps or more), THEN it is time to get a new camera.

I agree with Chris. I have a d50 and as tempting as it is to upgrade the body I will be adding to / upgrading my lenses first.

yup. get new glass.

Rebecca, I just looked at some of your images. Your photog skills look fine. The camera won't help them necessarily (may enhance). Those skills are all you. I know a Pro who in fact uses 3 D40's. Another guy has a Canon 5d mark II, and dials it down to 8mp for his work (never knew those things has custom set ups...cool! I could use that for indoor vs outdoor)

I agree with what everyone else said. Spend the money on lenses not a new body.

The body you have will be fine. Get a nice new lens. Like chris said - A nice prime - i love my 50mm f1.4 (on a D40 like you).

One thing to note though. D40's need AF-S lenses as they can't autofocus from the body. You need AF-S lenses as they have the focus motor in the lens itself. Just something to think about as they are a bit more expensive. Its the only downside to my D40.

Well i kind of agree guys, Atleast it's an AF-S motor. But with some 85mm I think for me getting a new D90 would help me cover more of some events. Especially the selective focus on video.

Thanks everyone. I am still considering a new body but we'll see. Any more 'must have' lenses?

Do you have good flash unit? The ability to bounce flash and/or fill up a room with light can be more important than choosing a faster lens or more telephoto lens.
