Okay, so this is probably payback for posting all those beautiful sunny shots of the west coast while the east coast was snowed in and "down under" getting flooded with rain. It's raining here today, and I really want to get out and take some beautiful shots. I'm so sorry! Karma stinks sometimes! I want to see the sun!

Any ideas on protecting cameras from the wet rain with household items? Rain, rain, go away. ;-)

I've got big-time "professional" gear for rainy days now. But before that: contractor trash bags.

You can pick them up at home improvement stores. They are meant for hauling nails and screws so the plastic is about three times as thick as kitchen trash bags.

When you cut the opening for the lens, use a velcro strap from the crafts department to tie it down. It will still move a bit, but not much if you're careful.

This way, you are still able to access the back of the camera to view your shots, changes camera settings, and hold the camera body. I'll admit: you'll look a bit silly when you toss that big bag over your head and disappear behind the camera like those old-timey things in the 1900's, but hey it's keep your camera dry as a greedy wife's cheeks at her rich husband's funeral!

Being from Portland Oregon we have very few days without rain in the winter so it's a constant problem for me too. I completely agree with Caren's idea and have used something similar to it a few times myself.

I bought one years ago when I was taking eventing photos and it did great. It is a neoprene type so it also kept my hands warm. Here is a link to the brand I have.

I was in the local camera shop the other day and they have some others to choose from. They seem to be more of a clear plastic bag but for the occasional use, it might be what you need.
