need help on the ratio

what do you think is the best ratio? 3:2 ? or 16:9 ? :(

It depends what for, panoramic stuff looks good in 16:9, so do a lot of wide angle shots.

Portraits can suit either, depending on the shot...

Don't overlook arbitrary crop ratios and also square format can produce really lovely results with the right subjects, often square format looks great with some degre of symmetry, both symbolic and explicit.

@meekoy
personally, i go for 3:2. if you tend to look at your photos in a widescreen monitor/lcd/led/plasma tv, 16:9 is good then. otherwise, it's just too wide. :D

I'm kinda confused. When you ask "3:2 or 16:9" I think of motion film format. Feature films are shot in 16:9 format on 35mm film, and then cropped to fit your TV at a 3:2 ratio.

So, what does this have to do with photography?

In the world of photography, 35mm film and digital sensors are naturally a 3:2 ratio. That's why when making 8"x10" prints, you lose a little on the edges because that is a 5:4 ratio.

Because I crop for prints on my website, I use a 3:2, 5:4, or 1:1 crop ratio. Unless I shoot panoramic, which then varies from about a 6:1 to 12:1 ratio.

@jasonbarnette newer cameras offer different shooting aspect ratios. some have options to shoot 4:3, 3:2, square 1:1 or 16:9. i guess that's what kent was asking
