Looking ahead to day 365...I want a book!

December 29th, 2009
I just started this project but I LOVE LOVE IT already! This year is going to be a huge year of my life. I am studying abroad in China for two months, turning 30, graduating from college, and starting my first year of teaching. BIG YEAR, and that is just the stuff that I have planned! So...looking ahead to day 365...is there a way that we could have an option to purchase a book of our 365 photos and captions? I know I could copy and paste to a photo book on snapfish or shutterfly but I thought it would be neat if this website had an option to purchase a photo journal at the end of the year. Just something to think about, I guess. Thanks for reading and possibly considering!

That's a fabulous idea. For me it's just a year...43 years old and no major life changes (I hope), but it would be a very cool thing to look back on in ten years and see what mattered, what was beautiful, what was important...

Ross, I know that would be a considerable financial undertaking, so do you have any tips on how this could be accomplished as a do-it-yourself project and not look, well, cheesy? :)

Collete,
I know that there are several photo sites that allow you to do it yourself and make really nice hard bound photo books. Technically, you could just use one of them. I was hoping for some sort of magic computer technology that would allow this site to be linked with one of those so that the stuff here could be uploaded and put int the book from here. I guess I could just not be a lazy bum and just uplad the pics and descriptions to the photobook daily too. =) Some sites are...Snapfish.com and Shutterfly.com. If you are in the states, Walmart.com and Walgreens.com also do it, I believe.

Yeah, I'm in South Carolina, USA...thank goodness for the internet, because otherwise technology moves this way verrrrrrry sloooooowly...thanks!

Hi,
I've been looking in to this for some time now, there have been a few problems finding somewhere that can print so many pages, and at a reasonable price (some have been a joke, in the hundreds if dollars). I'll continue working on teaming up with a printer and will let you know of the progress we make.

Thanks

Ooh this is a brilliant idea. I definitely would be interested in something like this. I'll have to root around online for some prices. Even after only doing this for a month, it's been interesting to look back over the pictures and see where I was a month ago.

Ross, it doesn't have to be 365 pages. You can put multiple posts on one page. Done that with Shutterfly. But, as we all know, since each book would be "unique" versus mass production, costs escalate. Reverse Economies of scale.

That's a great idea. I'm already saving all my project photos in a single folder. Even if the project doesn't end up with a way to do it internally, I might as well upload them to Shutterfly and make a book when it's all over. Thanks for the inspiration, Sara!

A Better idea...I have enough Coffee table books to fill the Library of Congress. Since I am the creative weirdo that lists music with his images, I am considering marrying the images and the corresponding song snipet (maybe 20 seconds worth, fade in fade out) together on DVD. Time of DVD would be a little over an hour. I have the software and recording equipment to do both. I know there are even easier versions out there that would be cost effective, if people do them individually and on their own. And I also know people in Indianapolis that could do this too on a more professional level. Just another idea...(?)

Thats a nice idea Ross, though I think its a little long, though it'd be nice to sit back and watch. It depends how you arrange it though, weekly, or monthly chapters? Because its a lot easier to flick through a book than watch through a DVD but thats my opinion. Idk, I like the idea of having the images bound in a physical format but thats me. :) I'm a bit of a tradionalist in that way. Even though I shoot digitally, I like to get prints and such.
Another thing that would be nifty is to be able to choose the best image from each month that we've taken, the one that personally means the most, to be put on a calender for next year, reminding us of events of the year previously. A feature like that'd be nifty. Though I guess we could do it manually via a third party. :)

I gave a couple of photobooks made by Snapfish for Christmas that were really well done, and I was very happy with the results. That might be an idea for you, Sara. You can put captions on them and they will auto-fill the books or allow you to customize the layout. Good luck!

I'm new here as of today, but I just wanted to say I think this is a brilliant idea. I would absolutely save up to buy a book like this, even if it was a bit on the pricey side (though 'hundreds' likely wouldn't be doable for me). I'll look around for something just in case, but I would love to see it offered here!

Just FYI...I am creating one on Snapfish and it is a max of 150 pages and it is running about a $154. It is a nice hard bound book. Clearly, you have to put multiple pictures on each page but it looks nice and you can pick different backgrounds, etc. It is a bit pricey but I don't have another option at this point. Who knows what will come available between now and then? I just wanted to do this as I go so I am not trying to do it all at once at the end of the year. Maybe a better option will come available soon.

There are lots of sites that will let you print books from blogs at a reasonable price. I think contacting them might be an option.

I am creating my book as I go along 365. I am on a MacBook Pro and can drag each photo to a keepsake photo book. As for the size of the book I can have anywhere from 1 to 16 photos per page and can write along the way as well if I wish to. I am guessing it will be about a 50 to 75 page, 8 1/2 X 11 hardcover book. And yes I know it will cost me, but I really want a copy of the year and my photo progress, assuming I make some.

Try this site:

http://www.lulu.com

I checked prices and for a 365 page book it's right around $80.

You can choose your own paper style, binding, color or b&w, etc.

You can also create your own books and calendars for your own personal use or to sell.

I think there are several options out there (Apple's iPhoto book service, which is very good - if you have an Apple, Snapfish, which I am told is good quality, and Blurb, which again is very good) to name but a few, as well as many options on the high street (have you checked your local supermarket?).

Of course, many sizes of book are on offer as has been mentioned and many finishes. I think it should be possible to produce a 365 book affordably, especially if unconventional page sizes are considered (7x7, anyone?) Given the time & effort most 365ers expend, they would probably be happy to spend £1 per week towards a book and I would be very surprised if they didn't get change out of their £52 when they come to order a book at the end of the year. Also, some sites, Photobox, Blurb, do promotions from time to time, such as free postage or % off, so if you are a patient person, you could simply wait for such an event.

I did a test of a sample of my 365 on Blurb and anyone who is interested can flick through here on the Blurb bookstore:
http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1503056

If you are especially stuck for things to do, there is also an aforementioned 7x7 book full of Hong Kong images on the same site.

I guess some folk might also want to put their 365 on a poster & no doubt the "contact sheet" function in Photoshop could do this with very little trouble. There are plenty of places on the web who will produce a large print for the back of your kitchen door or to stick on your wall.
