Lightroom versus Aperture

I just read through "lightroom or elements" post. Might as well ask.

I have been using Apple Aperture 90% of the time but also have LR3 that came with the camera installed on my Mac. Wonder if anyone uses both? Which do you prefer? Thank you.

Not an expert in any software at all, but I tried aperture and did not like it very much. I prefer the simpler iPhoto to that. However I have just started with Lightroom the past couple of days and the workflow seems to be much more intuitive. The other reason I did not like Aperture was my mac seemed to slow down with Aperture but Lightroom works faster. (It may be just that my laptop has become old :) ) Secondly Lightroom gave me the option of accessing my library from its existing location instead of creating its own file structure which Aperture did. Again I may have missed that option in Aperture.

You can get a 30 day trial of Lightroom. I am on day 2 right now...so I am far from an expert. But, so far I like it. I used to use my work copy of Photoshop before getting a new computer. In an effort to keep work and hobby separate, I am looking to buy my own editing software. So- far Lightroom seems to do 95% of what I would use on Photoshop. I think I will end up buying it.

Lightroom came with your camera/mac? I wish it came with mine. I am having a hard time thinking about spending another 300 dollars after just buying this computer.

@cohare It came as a software for my camera. Got iPhoto on the mac tho.

I have both programs and personally love Lightroom. I use it for about 95% of my editing, the other 5% I use photoshop. Its super easy to use and you really have a lot of options. I'm usually short on time and so the presets that I have on Lightroom makes things a breeze. :) Here's one of my fav websites for lightroom: http://lightroomkillertips.com/

Used to do my processing in either GIMP or Picnik until I discovered Lightroom. Now I'm so entrenched (and in love with Lightroom) that I can't see myself considering anything else.

I'm in the same boat as @srahman , used to do little bits of tinkering in other things but Lightroom (and RAW files) rocked my world to its core and I've never looked back once.

Oh, although, sorry, have never used Aperture. Being an Apple thing I can't imagine it'd match Adobe's effort for functionality, though.

@eyebrows being apple you'd probably have to use an apple camera and use apple software to upload it, etc etc etc...

@vikdaddy haha, yeah, with special encoding on the JPGs so you could only view them on Macs and iPhones and such...

Some of you guys are way too hard on apple! I personally would use any other type of computer. But as for Lightroom vs Aperature, I'd have to say Lightroom. I recently bought the student/teacher version (it was cheap!) and I'm still learning. But so far, I LOVE it.

OK looks like I will have to give LR a try! Thank you everyone!

I use Aperture 100% of the time. I am very happy with it. I think people are partial to what they get /learn first. I was a PC girl for many years and switched to a Mac a year ago. I wish I would have done it sooner. Try both Viranod and decide. I'm sure there's good and not so good with both, it depends on your needs.
