Backdrops/backgrounds?

March 10th, 2011
I am a 'mom with a camera'. No offense to anyone who may work in one, or does it for a living, but I REFUSE to take my son to get studio shots done when I have a perfectly good (and fairly expensive) camera sitting at home ;). I would like to do some studio style shots for Easter, but I want either an eastery background or just a white background-what could i use? Or where can I find some relatively inexpensive backdrops to use? Or make one? Any tips or tutorials for a mom with camera that may occasionally do shots for other people?

When I took the shot of my cousin for the Flashdance shot, I just used a white flat sheet from our bed. I tacked it up to the wall and you really couldn't tell. It was super easy and totally free. Haha!

I bought some white fleece and black fleece at the fabric store. It’s nice because it doesn’t wrinkle easily plus it’s cheap.

@lisjam1 Does it attract pet hair? Because we have 5 animals, and i just picture the black fleece COVERED in siberian husky hair lol

I was looking for the same ideas and I found this... I haven't tried it. But I thought I would at least suggest it in case you would like to try it.

My father used to use a white sheet tacked up on the wall. and had good success with this. (He did not teach me how photography though.) I don't like a white sheet, but have not found my "perfect" background.

@amorton1437 Um, yes! If you look at my This and That album, you can see my dog and cat decided to take it over. I’ve seen muslin backdrops on Amazon pretty cheap. I was thinking about trying one out.

I've got a Walmart clearance-bin blue curtain panel that I use as a background/backdrop for some of my photos (the one I'm uploading tonight, for example)

Honestly......I am more of a natural guy. I'd rather a background in a park, lake, pond, beach etc... I just feel like backdrops look to fake. That''s just me though....not my style. However, I have used basic curtains in the past (walmart, target etc...) and they work great!! Just make sure you have some distance between your subject and the backdrop.
