@kirsty1975 emma is right, it's mechanical & not actually a sound effect that you can turn on or off. i looked it up myself, checked forums & other pages, I don't think there's any available workaround to it.
I haven't got your model of camera but mine has a facility in the Settings that turns the sound on and off. It's actually a simulated (electronic) sound in mine which makes this possible. If yours is the same then go to Settings.
Yours is probably mechanical. However, there may be a setting that reduces the sound by not letting it open again until you take your finger off the shutter button. I don't know how it works on Canons, but under shutter mode in the Nikon menu, there are various options (single, timer, continuous, etc.) and one is "Quiet" mode. Maybe look at see.
your camera needs to make that sound - it's the mirror flipping to let in the light. The alternative might be to use the Live View mode, as the mirror isn't needed then (because you're viewing via the LCD screen and not the viewfinder, which is what the mirror is for - so you can see through it).
Thanks everyone. I can switch the beep on and off that alerts me I'm in focus but can't find anything for shutter sound. I always thought the shutter sound was simulated in all digital cameras. Oh well. I was getting brave there but now I'll shrink back in my shell, lol. One day I'll be brave enough to go out and shoot strangers.
@vikdaddy ah right got it. It was when I used compacts I remember playing with the shutter sounds but being clueless about these things on slrs I hadn't actually thought it was the mirror. All makes sense now.
Only thing is now I've gotten so used to my canon I hate going back to my compact, lol. I've used it once since I started this project and realise how happy I am not to be using it much. Will have a go with it though and see. Don't know when I'll get out and about yet as weather rotten and my eldest is unwell but really want to do it. Fed up of trees and plants and objects, lol
@kirsty1975 I know, don't like using my compact often, despite its awesomeness (Canon S90!) The mirror is used to reflect the image through the lens to the viewfinder - you can't avoid it in traditional DSLRs like the 450D. I used to have one, and now I have the 7D and it's exactly the same thing.
@kirsty1975 Sorry I should have qualified my answer with, I have the same model camera, and there is no way of doing it. In live view mode it makes it even louder...unfortunately we just have to put up with it!
@kirsty1975 out in the street, it's pretty loud already, and drowns out the shutter (which sounds loud cause it's next to your ear). Holding the camera at waist height and looking away from the subject at the right moment makes you even les noticeable.
