IT has happened!

March 25th, 2011
See today's post for further details (my 2nd album) but today IT happened. I dropped my camera face-down on the lens and my brand-new 50mm won't focus and even worse, it absolutely will NOT come off my camera?

I have no clue what to do.....try my hardest to get it off? Send to Canon? Send to camera shop? Just sucks because I don't have the money to get it fixed, especially its its gonna cost more then the lens...I'm at a loss....feel like my dog died. LOL.

Enough of the pity party...but any ray of hope is appreciated!

I don't have any suggestions, but I'm sending cyber hugs your way. I am so sorry to hear this happened. I hope everything works out for you. Did you try calling Canon's customer support? They might be able to give you some advice or at least let you know what it may cost to repair.

Awwww you poor thing. I guess take it to a camera store and see what they can do. Hopefully it'll be all good. Hugs!

Claim on your home insurance? I did the same thing, my uv filter smashed and the lens wouldn't come off, but my other half kept trying and managed to get the lens off (as mine was new as well I cheekily sent it back saying it didn't work and got a refund).

I understand your feelings of despair and I second Karens advice about home insurance. My daughter knocked my camera (and laptop) off the desk last month and it landed face down on the lens. We had to pay the excess but they replaced both the laptop and the lens and even upgraded my lens. (It was an 18-55mm and they replaced it with an 18-200mm).
If the lens is stuck then don't try and force it as you may do further damage.

@emmar84 pay the excess of what?
March 25th, 2011
The excess on our home insurance policy, ours is set at £100.

Something to consider is your home insurance will go up as you will have a claim... after your deductable, and the insurance incress it may just be better to eat the cost and fix it yourself. Canon has good repair, call the local warrentee place and they will often give you a price before they fix it.

Will it still manually focus? You could do that for a while.

Or you could just fix the body and buy a used kit lens cheap... there are tons of them out there... or TIME for an UPGRADE... those white lenses are nice...

I believe Emma is talking about the deductible as we call here in the US. As for your homeowners going up, it would depend upon whether you’ve had other claims and how much the claim is. Also, some companies apply a loss free credit if you haven’t had a claim in a few years which could be removed at renewal so that could increase your premium. Yes, I work in insurance!

I am really sorry to hear that, and you really know that I am sorry because you know what happens to my camera. Here's the deal, I am going to tell you what I did, I live in Los Angeles, and the closest can express service was 60 miles from where live, so I took the lens there myself, they gave me an estimate, I am going to be paying $110 and I authorized the service, they can ship the camera back to you for free, but you don't need to go to a cannot express service, you can send the camera over UPS or regular mail. I hope my information is can it be helpful to you. Again I'm so sorry

@dejongdd @shutterbunny @minxymissk @emmar84 @icywarm @lisjam1 @michellegaynor @alecio Thank you so much everyone. I had a busy day today and just got home so I've had no time to think about it...I'm already having withdrawls. I guess I will ship it to Canon and hope for the best. I just blew a ton on new cell phones today and cannot afford a ton on fixing it. Technology and hobbies..Ughh! Alecio did you just crack the lens or was there more damage? I have a feeling I broke even more by messing with it. The focus ring, I think its called, was stuck and when I turned it I think something else broke..and it rattles when you shake it. Not cool..at all. I really just wish I could get it off so I can have my camera back!!! Anyway.....its too frustrating to be on here and not being able to take pics, not that mine are great, but still. So if you guys don't hear from me for a while, you know why!!! Thanks again.
