more lifted images on popular page

March 31st, 2011
wow.. I didn't even realise that.. the picture sure didn't "fit in" with the rest of that persons album..

exactly, there are another 2 lifted, one of kittens and another a film poster

why do people do it?

It's a shame people plagerize like this. I see the same thing when people share quotes too on FB.

it's like the other week an experienced 365'er put on a google image of a plane flying over a town from a satellite or something. that ended up on popular page for 2 days ?!

Let Ross know!! He'll pull her account.

Folks, she is 16 years old. Of course nobody should use other people's images, of course!.... but maybe we can be a little more gentle in how we're approaching this and her? I just don't want this website to be hurtful for anyone.

I know this has come up a lot, and I've been frustrated in the past too, but just adding my two cents on this particular situation.

get out of here! Really??? How are they not noticing this? I have actually seen a few "lifted " photos myself, but just figured it was just me thinking that. I don't get why some people would do that and not think that someone out there is going to recognize the photo!!!

don't think listing the true link and saying its lifted is hurtful as long as the image has been 100% poached which it has.
at 16 most people know what is copyright & theft

@rachdbo - i did mail ross - so it's up to him what he does, personally i'd make her remove the images and explain copyright so it's not being harsh on her

@harley84 recognised the one from clintons cards lol
March 31st, 2011
@kmrtn6 lol.... yes if you are giving credit where credit is due... then alright, but blatantly taking it and listing it as your own... not so much! and i agree 16 is definitely old enough to know better, as i am sure they are taught that in school! Kylie, the Clintons card???? omg some people, thats pretty gutsy lol!!!

@melissachi --- I know people who do this kinda of stuff all the time. They think nothing of using someone elses photos or quotes as their post on FB without stating the source. They just don't consider what they are doing. But even a 16 year old probably understands plagerism because it's talked about endlessly in school. Maybe you could mention, in a nice way of course, people here are paying attention and will speak up.

@kmrtn6 I totally agree, she should know, and I think your email to Ross makes sense. I just want to encourage her to keep taking photos, her other photos are really nice - and clarify at the same time that she absolutely cannot use other people's.

I'm extra sensitive around this because I work with young women on self esteem and leadership development, so I want to make sure that we talk with her as adult allies in a responsible and also supportive way. As I said, I agree with you that those images should come down and she should better understand copyright.

it doesn't seem to me that she is trying to take credit for the photo. perhaps she doesn't know the "rules" of the site. she posted a movie poster as well, that obviously isn't a photo she took, but she didn't say she did take it. the EXIF on the kitty photo is the site where she saved it from....i think we need to stop being so judgmental from the start and help younger members understand the purpose of the site, and that we only post our own photos here.

Things like this frustrate me on multiple levels. One because I do not believe taking a picture and claiming it to be your own is right, and two because there are folks (like myself) that actually take there own pictures and have never made the PP.

She has one of some books too that seems lifted. Unless she has a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II. Seems to be a habit she's developing.

I understand it can be intimidating seeing all these great pictures on here and wanting to put out something wonderful. However, putting a picture up and claiming it as your own is very serious. It can get you in trouble in the real world and after all, shouldn't we be preparing young people for the real world? Consequences can be harsh. It is a lesson best learnt now and not later when the stakes are higher.

My guess is that Ross will pull her account (he always does when this sort of thing arises) but if he chooses to not and just warn her...I'm fine with that.

Hi, no it's not on, I've deleted the account.

@sdpace Yes! Thanks, that's what I was trying to say. I want to make sure she doesn't give up on photography altogether. We need to encourage younger members, and make sure this is a learning community.
