Help please! Memory card problems!

April 4th, 2011
So, this evening, I was taking some photos on my Nikon P80 camera, as usual, when the message "Out of memory." appears on the camera screen...

"OK, so I've run out of space on this card," I think to myself, "I'll just delete some pictures from the card, to make space - it's no big deal!"

So, I put the card into my laptop, and delete quite a few of the older pictures (mainly stuff from last year) and then put the card back into the camera, to carry on shooting...

"Out of memory." it says...

What, still?

So, I put the card back into my laptop again, and delete everything that's left on the card... I put the card back into my camera again...

It comes up with "Out of memory." again...

How is that possible?! The is completely empty - wiped - nothing on it! I just don't understand it!

Has anyone else had this experience? Can anyone suggest a solution?

(The card, if anyone's wondering, is a SanDisk Extreme 4GB SD/HC card)

The problem goes back to an old Mac vs. PC problem that has bugged people for years. Essentially, when you delete files from a memory card on a PC, you are not actually deleting the data but rather just the file that the PC reads. In other words, you aren't deleting anything.

The best solution is to reformat the memory card inside your camera. This is what I always do and it never fails: I've filled up my 4GB CF card more times than I can count, but each time I reformat it is clean and ready to use.

@jasonbarnette
Thanks Jason - I'll give that a go... :)

Are you saying this problem is normally PC-specific, though? If so, that's confusing, as I'm using a MacBook Pro!

@manek43509 Hmmmm that is very interesting! That was one of the oldest battles between the two computing giants: PC only erased how the computer saw the file, but not the file itself. Mac erased everything.

I also have a MacBook Pro, but I use my camera to reformat the memory card each time. See if that works. If not...you might have slipped into the Twilight Zone.

Also be careful how long you have had the SD card, sometimes after a few years they just get too old and overused to work properly anymore.

@jasonbarnette, @nectarfizz
Just gone into the "Settings" menu in the camera, and chose "Format Card" - everything seems to be working nicely once again! Great stuff - thanks for all your help... :)

@manek43509 Make sure you empty the Trash before you eject the memory card from your mac.

@manek43509 - NO! It happens on a Mac book. If you have a usb drive and you just drag the files to the bin, it will NOT free up space. You have to format it.
