It depends on the lens. If it was a high end lens, yeah, I think so. If it is a standard, easily replaceable lens, they are disposable plastic made that way to replace.
That's terrible to hear. I have dropped cameras and damaged them (back when they made cameras that could take it), but never damaged a lens, amazingly enough. I would be freaking out.

I broke a lens recently - luckily i have stuff like that covered under my insurance
