Help

A friend of mine recently asked me to take pictures of her in front of our university's seal.
So what is the best setting for taking pictures of people when using a canon powershot sd1300 is?

I would go aperture priority, f/8 to start and work your way down (bigger numbers = smaller aperture) depending on how close she is to the seal and how much you want in focus.
As for white balance and ISO, depends on time and type of day it is, or if the seal is inside.
Great thing about digital photog, reviewing shots w/o spending money on prints. Take many shots at different settings and see which you like the best. WB and ISO have auto settings too, letting the camera choose what it reads as best. There is full auto mode for that matter, let the camera do all the settings, if all else fails for you.

It all depends on what you want to achieve Brittany. Some seals and designs are simple and easily recognisable so a sharp focus on your friend with a shallow dof leaving the seal a little soft might just work. But a deep focus so everything is visible and sharp will work too, but may just look like a happy snap. Hopefully you have some good light because shadowing may be an issue, and think about what colour clothes your friend will wear because it may conflict with the seal???

And make it fun, just play around with settings and enjoy it. It's photography, it should be fun!

Make sure the light isn't too harsh, I would say. You can shoot earlier in the morning, or later in the afternoon..when the light is low and the shadows won't be too harsh.

Hey there, I have the same camera. I usually shoot in Program with ISO 80-200 (I never go past that... waaay too much noise. 80 usually does the trick), White Balance set to the correct one for the lighting (the auto white balance is pretty reliable but sometimes it's slightly off... the other settings are more accurate), no flash, and the focusing mode to whatever the situation is. For a portrait, you can just keep it on normal. You should take some with flash too... since I don't know what the lighting will be like, I can't say what the results will be like. Sometimes in Program, the camera sets too slow of a shutter speed. In that case, You can use the children&pets setting... almost everything in that mode is automatic but you can control flash.
I hope this helps and isn't an irrelevant, long post.

Thank you guys these all help.
The seal is outside so lighting shouldn't be a huge problem.
