Privacy rules for street photography

April 26th, 2011
Ok I am sure it has been discussed but I really need to know for sure the legalities for street photography and for uploading these shots to the internet. I live in Victoria Australia so I need to know the rules for the country/area I live in not other countries as it may differ to here. I thought from other discussions that it is ok legally to do this but as I only had a go at it for the first time this week I then started getting comments from friends like this "Hey joanne be careful doing this . 1976 .privacy act . Can lead you to being sued . " and I really need to know as I don't want to get into trouble. Does anyone know where to look up this subject in actual legal documents? Thanks in advance for your coments on this issue.

That's amazing! I apologize for lightly hijacking the thread, but I'd like to know if there is somewhat the same info about Japan, but written in English. I'm always scared to take photos because it feels so rude to me here. I guess cause they are so polite. It's rather hard to explain.

@icywarm Well I've been chased out of two department stores. The first one was the first week I was in Japan. Actually now that I think about it, they both happened on the same day on Hondori St. in Hiroshima Japan. One of them I wasn't even inside. I was taking a photo of the actual store because it was named "Octopus Army" and I thought it was the coolest thing. They sold clothing. The lady working there came running out shouting and screaming at me. Suffice it to say, I've not posted that photograph anywhere.

inside I understand...private prop... no dice.... outside on public street... she got nothing... but if she had a bat... I'd run too...

she is likely worried you are stealing window designs, ect... I find if you talk to the people... tell them how great you thought the title of the store was... they lighten up... or carry a case of beer... that gets you in anywhere....

I took a photo the other day of this great glowing painting on the wall of a mini golf place, in a mall, very sneaky-like, but when I went to get another, the manager walks up, all Mr Attitude and tells me I cannot take pictures here. Okay. Then he proceeds to tell me that you cannot take photos in ANY public place. Suffice to say, I be sticking to my plants.

@icywarm Unfortunately I only know 3 or 4 words of Japanese, so I'm unable to communicate my intentions.

@silverdraggin than you need beer... that crosses international boarders!
