Manual mode

For some reason I cannot change my shutter speed past 200 when in manual mode. Does anyone else have this problem? I thought with manual you can completely change everything!?!?

Do you have a flash on? The camera won't let you set the shutter speed faster than what it can sync the flash at, if the flash is on.

Flash is likely it... manual flash might be on... even if an onboard flash as not been popped...

If the flash is on then synch speed for on board is limited to 1/200th of a second in most, also if you're using a speedlite it's often the same...

If it's doing when the flash is popped down then your flash sensor, the bit that knows if the flash is up or down may be stuck, probably a little dirt or dust...

yes sorry... it is when Im using the flash. I forgot to mention that. But is it just Nikon cameras that do this, or do all brands do this? My photography teacher thought that this was strange, but she is not that familiar with Nikon and wasnt too sure.

Nikon, Canon, whatever Sync speed is the fastest shutter speed you can use with flash, period. You cannot use a faster shutter speed than the sync speed with flash.
