Can you help me identify a bug?

I took this picture today, but have no idea what kind of insect it is, if you know please let me know!! I took it in Moreno Valley, California, which is about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. We normally don't have such brightly colored bugs.... except for the june bugs and a few butterflies.... It's a high desert climate so most of them are of the brown variety :)

@msk1p2 Thank you so much, that looks exactly like what I saw!

I have never seen that before. I would have to agree with Sandra though, based on the photos in her link that is what it looks like. The 5th picture in on the first row looks identical in features to your photo.

I know exactly what it is- a grossacilica nastioca! (ok maybe not exactly what it is- but I always wanted to make up a scientific sounding name). Seriously though- great shot

"Tarantula Hawk Wasp"?! That has to be the most terrifying-sounding insect name ever!

Tarantula hawk!!!! Did you catch it?
May 2nd, 2011
I read on wikipedia that this bug has the second to the worst sting..... he sure does have an awfully intimidating name!

@kimmistephens I did not catch it either, he was cool to look at, but as big as he was, I didn't want to get that close :)
