I'm a bit slap happy about tags but it struck me a bit more discipline might help. What do others think?
At first I put descriptive tags in but I have started adding dominant colours, and thought I might add genre descriptions (eg. macro, architecture). And things like SOOC seem to fit better as a tag than added on to the end of the description. I could go further and add tags that are an interpretation of the picture (eg. pain, joy, love, melancholy) etc.
Is there a generally accepted way of using tags or is it an individual thing? Does it just not matter?
i dont tag for days then suddenly remember and go back and do it .... i just use the obvious words like today was splash , apple , fruit, water ........ god that sounds boring i wouldnt look at me with those tags lol !
I do the general also. Occasionally if the photo is predominately one particular color Ill tag it with that color. But when I post I honestly go brain dead trying think of tags, so I never get creative.
I tend to do them sparingly. Usually the only time I use them in a search is for when I am looking at vacation ideas and want to see real photos of a location. If I am showing art, photography or a main site I will tag it, but after that I just really do not think about them.
I don't tag at all. Seems pointless to me, but then again I don't go browsing pictures, so maybe it's not for others. I wouldn't really know what to tag. There would be so many different things to tag on each picture.
I always tag with a combination of the technical info of the shot & camera used, some descriptive tags related to the subject, some locational tags, and anything appropriate that might be a bit more random. Have a peek at any of my pics & you'll get a feel for what I mean. I find it amazing, for example that nobody else has ever tagged a photo 'EOS 50D' - I'm sure others must be using this camera, or is it just me...?
I used to put sensible tags then started doing obtuse ones and now My tags are usually an aside to the comments I have made, my fav is 'it was this or a pic of her doing a huge poo sat in the library!'
This is a topic that calls out to librarians (like me). The topic is a huge one and there's plenty of debate about it! Here's an article about tags and folksonomies and why you should care: http://www.threadwatch.org/node/1206. After being in a profession where so much has been invested in the development of expert classification systems, the idea of "regular people" using tagging to leverage the wisdom of the crowd is a real paradigm shift! I think it really gets interesting when you are trying to describe images because they have so many dimensions!
@scooter@triciaanddazzle I don't think they are pointless, people can search for tags, so it's a way of advertising your picture and getting more views... maybe. Although if they were more used we might go into the possibility of 'tag spam' - putting up a tag just to get more views...
@smithss_27106 Thank you for the very interesting looking link - there's the rest of the evening gone :) I am interested in this from the computer science angle.
I usually forget to tag mine but when I remember I do tag them sometimes. I like sunsets, for instance, so it's fun sometimes to click on the sunset tag to see what else is out there and to enjoy looking at them.
I printed out the tag page so I have a list of the tags that I can refer to.
@ukcam some of it is in the exif data (unless you've 'saved for web' in photoshop & wiped all the info), putting it in the tags does save you the tiresome job of clicking on the exif data link though :-)
I don't tag unless its the theme tag. Its your choice though. Although now you all got me wondering if I should tag more! Never really thought about it and since I don't search...oy!
I always tag stuff. Just in case people want to search for my photos.. or so that people looking for photos of a telephone box (or whatever) might come across mine. It doesn't have to be interesting tags - the point is that if you have a photo of an apple.. and someone else is looking for photos of apples.. they find yours.
I occasionally put in silly tags, like "far too much chocolate" or something I feel like using to describe the picture more (usually in a stupid way though), like "wow, isn't this a silly photo".
I began using tags when I got a lot of questions about my kangaroo and parrot shots. Now I refer questions to the tags sometimes and it seems to work well. It's also useful when looking for one of your own shots, especially if you've got to the stage where you've got hundreds; it saves trawling back through all those calendars.
The only time I let my kiddo get on 365 is when I search through 'dinosaur' pictures. Without that tag I would never been able to brush my teeth in the morning!
I tag seriously and not so seriously, I use tags to search for other work, find new people etc, useful and for me, adds a another dimention to my photos when i'm feeling silly...
@sdpace Haha, probably, actually. I vaguely remember all this American stuff coming our way in the early '90s... TMNT, Santa Barbara/Young & The Restless, BON JOVI :D :D :D

@flamez you should add the word color also.

Sometimes I do silly tags but usually I just describe what the photo is.

I know with an Ace account you can search through your own tags, so there's another reason to do it.
