I use picnik, in effects you can use matte (softens and lightens the edge), vignette (softens and darkens), soft focus (whole picture softener), or focal softness (keeps the focal point in focus and softens the rest ~ adjustable foal point)
Not much help if you use photoshop but perhaps there is similar on there??
I use picnik as well Michelle!!! I have found the textures element in picnik (If you upgrade) has some wonderful, easy to use filters which can age your photos nicely...but agree with Michelle Gaynor totally!!!!
oooh yes thats the type o fthing!!! there must be something like that on photoshop!!!! i'm going to have a hunt for it later!!! otherwise my laptop will be downloading!!!
@chocochelle if i understand what you're trying to do, i use feathering in photoshop. here's one with a white/light "border":
you can also make the border black/dark to give it a vignette look, using the same technique.
select the image using the appropriate amount of feathering (depending on how "soft" you want the edges to be and how big your image is). then invert the selection and either delete it altogether or play with the Lightness slider in Hue/Saturation settings.
@chocochelle i don't use elements i have CS5. but when i use the selection tool, there is an option that appears in the menu bar at the top that is labeled Feather. you can enter any amount up to 250.
I do it what is probably the silly way in Photoshop Elements. First, I duplicate the layer. Then I use the paintbrush and set it to soft brush and a really big diameter and in either white or black, paint over the whole thing. Then, I select the eraser and put it in brush mode, also set to a soft brush with a really big diameter and erase the middle. Then I merge the layers together.
I'm sure it's more work than it has to be, but it's still pretty simple and gets the job done.
cheers guys. i have just had a go and also gone to the help in elements but i'm finding this complicated!!! nothing seems to behappening in feather. i'll keep playing. thank you all.
I don't know if you stiill need help on this.. This is an example of mine using picnik . (i also did other editing like cross-process..) The border is called Matte!
