Arggh! Need help and advice on damaged camera.

May 8th, 2011
Got my new HS10 DSLR style compact earlier this year. I've been careful with it but not been precious about it and OTT.

I'm disabled and was taking it off from around my neck last night when I lost my balance and banged the camera into a picture on the wall. The picture frame was dented but I thought the camera had escaped unscathed.

Today I've discovered that I was wrong. The outside edge of the lens is all cracked and chipped.

What should I do? Is it a claim under the home contents insurance for a new camera jobbie or is it possible to replace the lens on this style of camera?

I'm just at such a loss as to what to do. It's my first 'decent' camera and I'm distraught.

Any help, advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi!

Sorry to hear your woes, I felt the same way last week when my auto-focus lens stopped working on my camera ...

Does your camera still work and if so does the damage effect the photos in anyway? I looked into my contents insurance and although I'm covered for accidentaly damage, the excess was £175 - I googled repair centres near me and found the actual cost for repair was closer to £100, but the HS10 lens is fixed to the body so may well cost significantly more to repair ... Best bet is to drop a couple of repair places an e-mail stating the damage and see what their quote is, if it's more than the insurance, go with the insurance!

Did you crack the plastic housing around the lens, or the actual glass itself??

Morning guys,

The camera still works, but its not quite right on auto focus. Suppose its one way to get off the auto settings. Lol.

Its the lens itself which is damaged around the outside edge.
