28mm 1.8 or 30 1.4 Sigma?

I'm kinda debating which one to get..

I went over this myself for a long time, but settled on the 28 1.8. On one of the forums I frequent it seems like going with that Sigma is like playing the lottery. Some people had great copies while many others got copies that had front or rear focusing problems, shoddy AF, etc.

That being said, I couldn't be happier with the lens. It's on my camera 90% of the time and on a crop body it's a perfect normal lens.

@marubozo Well if I'm going 28mm, do you recommend the Canon over Sigma, or Sigma over Canon?

@boidflip I personally prefer the Canon. Better build quality and the USM on this lens is amazing. It will obtain focus in a fraction of a second, even in almost pitch black darkness. And finally, the Canon 28mm is a standard EF lens, which means if (more like when) I move to a full frame camera body the lens will still work. The Sigma 30 wouldn't.

@marubozo Oh alright thanks. What about image quality for 30mm Sigma vs 28mm Canon? As in sharpness, color, bokeh, etc?
I've been looking at a lot of threads and there seems to be different reviews. I'm leaning towards 1.4 30mm because of aperture, but I also heard that 28mm Canon is sharper because of the edges. However, I want the lens to be used in both portrait photography and also low light.

i was having trouble trying to make up my mind on these two as well . I ended up going with the 30mm sigma f/1.4 I havent really gotten into it .. But am happy with the results ive gotten so far . I ended up going with the sigma for the aperture and well canon supplies are getting harder to get due to the floods in japan. Gotta get out and use it more but im not sorry i brought it . Its my first None canon lens but was recommended to my by a professional canon user.

examples
f/1.4 iso 800 1/400s

was happy with this result. No flash used .

@liipgloss Ahh perfect. Well I'm leaning more towards the 30mm in fact. I do a lot of low light and I read in Amazon as well about the Canon supplies shortage. And thanks for the example! I love it.
