canon xt help!

May 9th, 2011
I'm turning to all the 365 Masterminds for help.
I've been shooting with a hand-me-down Canon XT since about November of last year. I've never had any problems, until last night.
I took my photo and noticed that sometimes when I hit the shutter button, nothing would happen. Didn't think much of it.
Today I doesn't work at all. Everything comes into focus and I can hear the lens working, but nothing happens when I hit that button. I've tried it on all the settings, on manual and auto focus. Everything is working fine....it just won't snap the picture.
Google said it might be my back up battery, which I didn't know existed. I changed it, and it's still not working. Am I missing something silly?

Yesterday, I got the ACE account for Mother's Day and I have a filter and a reverse macro ring on it's way. I'd really like to play with all this stuff...but that's not going to happen without a camera that works!
Any help or suggestions would be MUCH appreciated!

This is possibly a really stupid suggestion, is your memory card full?
From how you've described it sounds like what my canon does when the memory card iss full, everything works, it focuses to take the picture but of course you won't see it as there is no room left to store it.

@emmar84 Thanks Emma but I had thought of that. It was pretty full, I cleared it, and still nothing. I wonder if it could be a problem with the card?

Unfortuantely that's about as far as my technical knowledge goes (that and if a computer doesn't work threaten it with a hammer or kick it), can you try removing the memory card and takign a picture if yours has the abitlity to "shoot w/o card" mine can usualky save a few pictures on that mode just to the ameras memory.
If that works I would imagine it's the card, if not hopefully soemone else here can help.

@emmar84 Don't think that I haven't thought about giving it a good whack! Swearing at it didn't help either. I took the card out and it just says no cf. I guess it doesn't have internal memory. Thanks anyway!

To see if you can shoot without the memory card go into your camera menu, go to the first tab with the tools on it and on my camera it's the 7th option down the list.

@emmar84 Found it...but still nothing. Very frustrating!!

I'm not really all that smart when it comes to this stuff but you can check and see if it is the shutter by going to "sensor cleaning" in the menu(remove your lens first). Your camera will tell you what to do from there. If it opens then your shutter works fine?

@meggageg Thanks...I just tried that. The shutter opened and closed fine....but when I hit the button it doesn't take the photo.
