Help! My camera won't focus!

May 16th, 2011
I need your help! I have a Canon Rebel, and today I came home, and it won't focus at all. Normally, it beeps when it's focused, and it's not beeping OR focusing. All my shots come out blurry, and this is the only lens I have. What do I do?!

Have you tried removing the lens and putting it back on? Sometimes the contacts may just not be making a good connection and a quick change can get things going again.

@marubozo Thanks, but I tried it and it didn't work. :/

Did it get switched off of autofocus?

Is the switch on the side of the lens still on AF? If it is try switching it to manual then back...

Take the lens off and put it back on, while it's off look for anything in the way of the contacts...

If there's dirt on the front element or dust inside it can sometimes mess with focusing...

Yep....gonna suggest what Adam did. Switch back and forth between auto/manual focus. Also, clean your lens. Even if you can't see something, there may be a finger print smudge or something. Good luck!

check your focus setup.. I had mine on servo without realizing it and it was all a mess, it wouldn't beep or focus right, everything was blurry and it kept jumping around. . . . I think it was trying to readjust for movement or something (servo works GREAT when I am tracking the running kids. . not so much when standing in one place)

@rddaisy What exactly does servo mean? What do I want it to be on? I don't really know exactly how everything works yet, haha.
@cynak How should I clean it?
May 16th, 2011
@kelseyyx23 They sell lens cleaning cloths. I always have a uv filter on mine so that's what I need to clean if it gets dirty. Just be careful not to scratch it. I would recommend getting a uv filter to protect your lens though. Much better cleaning that then your camera lens completely. Use a circular motion with the soft lens cloth. Either with lens solution or water.

Actually, it the switch somehow got flipped! It was on manual instead of auto focus. Thanks everyone!

@Kelsey,

here is what I would suggest you:

1. Remove lens and clean (is it the original or a new one?)
2. Reset your camera (do you know how to do that?)
3. Observe if your lens has the function "VC" and if that is on - sometimes that can interfere with the focus - still donĀ“t know why this happen (by the way... which lens do you have?)
4. Sometimes the problem is not the camera. It could be your lens.
