Help needed please.

Yesterday I did an intensive beginners day with Kelvin Chong (see utube) he is a professional photographer and very inspirational (had a fun day). I have come to realise that if I am going to do this properly (and three different people who I don't actually really know have seen my work and approached me to do events for them, offered money and everything so there is potential!) there are a few things I need so I also need some advice!

I have a Canon EOS 1000D and think my next piurchase needs to be ~ I have cut and pasted the information here cos I am clueless.

"Canon Speedlite 320EX Flash Unit Canon Speedlite 320EX Flash Unit

In a first for Canon Speedlites, the versatile new Speedlite 320EX features an LED light on the front of the flash body that can be used to illuminate nearby subjects in dim light. The light is ideal for video recording but can also be used as a modelling light or as an AF assist beam during Live View shooting. When used with EOS DSLRs that have integrated Speedlite transmitters, the Speedlite 320EX can be used as a wireless slave unit positioned off-camera"

What I am after is a flash that can be integrated but can also be seperate so is this what I need and how the hell do you know if your camera has an "integrated Speedlite transmitter"?????? If there is a way of checking? And if it doesn't have one can I get one and what should I ask for??

THANK YOU in advance from your friend the "MCV" (Menopausal Camera Virgin)!

I haven't heard of the 320EX, but I own the 380EX and it is well-worth the money I paid for it. :)

Michelle, I thought the 7D was the first body to get an integrated Speedlight Transmitter however if your camera does not have it built in,(i will check). You can still buy wireless transmitters form ebay for around $20, and they work. Pocket Wizards are too expensive. $170 Each, you need two.
You can also get off camera flash cables and connect that way. The only cameras that have the integrated Speedlight transmitter are the EOS 600D, EOS 60D and EOS 7D.

If you need any more help on getting your flash off your camera just ask, I do it all the time. With the $20 wireless transmitters and the flexible cable.

@scoobyjohnston Thank you Scott, is the light that I have highlighted above what I need? (mainly for boudoir, but also being pestered to do two weddings and a family portrait) I will check out Ebay ~ just to confirm I am looking for a wireless transmitter for Canon flash (will it say more than that?) and flexible cable?? Sorry to be so dim, the technology is a mystery to me!

Hey Michelle, well I use the "Cactus" wireless transmitter. Its a universal wireless transmitter and works with any camera and flash. That is what I use to do my water shots. This is a cactus set on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Cactus-Wireless-Flash-Trigger-Set-V4-/110700881075?pt=Camera_Flash_Accessories&hash=item19c64964b3#ht_500wt_949

For the rest I cant comment because I dont use Canon.

Yes, that is it, well done @smartie they ones are better than mine. I use these currently http://cgi.ebay.com/Wireless-4-Channel-Flash-Trigger-Receiver-Transmitter-/130522253910?pt=Camera_Flash_Accessories&hash=item1e63bb8a56
Boudior should not be a problem for these. Your wedding you will need an off camera flash cable and hold it on your other hand and for family portraits buy a lightsphere or similar flash diffuser.

TBH a lightsphere will do you the world of good and practice your off camera flash at home before venturing out with it, as I have found using flash exposure compensation is a whole new ball game and a fun one.

Good luck and if you have no joy PM or reply to me and I will see what I can do to help.

Regards

Scooby
