Help how can I get my photos off of my XD card????

May 20th, 2010
I did some reading on my camera yesterday and got some amazing shots today and now the xd card is refusing to let me put them on the computer, I cant even see them on my camera. If I turn it on it just beeps and says reformat card, deleting all data....nooooo.....so I've tried a few trial free retrieve lost photos websites with no luck stating it works for such circumstances, They are still either gone for good or hiding. Does anyone know how I can maybe retrieve some of them??? It was a day of opportunities of photos I wont get again so I'm very disappointed :-(

P.S. It's an Olympus XD 256MB card.

Please help me!!!!!

Try recova -- http://www.piriform.com/recuva. It's pretty good at recovering files no matter what the file type is. I'd also pick up a card reader and not try to recover the files through the camera. And replace that XD card. I wouldn't trust it again.

I will try it but I already use a card reader and don't worry I will be getting a new card. I'll let you know if it works, thanks :-)

When you put the card into the reader does it create a drive letter for it in Windows? Are you getting any specific error messages?

If it gives you a drive letter (I'll use E: as my example) then try the following (assuming you're on Windows):

Start -> Run -> cmd

At the command prompt type the following:

chkdsk e: /r

Let it do its thing and cross your fingers. I did this with a USB key that went corrupt on me that had all of my pics and videos from my last trip to Mexico. I LOST MY MIND at the thought of losing them all. The above got my key back up and running with all my photos/videos in tact.

Good luck!

During a training with a group of teachers, one of the teachers deleted some pictures off what we thought was the computer but my sd card was still in the computer so it actually took them off my card and we didn't realize it. It was pictures from my sons first vacation when he was maybe 4 months old. I was almost in tears as a new mommy losing those captured moments. Luckily, the tech guys in house was able to retrieve all but 1 picture. I don't know how he did it but I know it can be done. You might have to pay a tech guy to retrieve them for you if what you've tried already isn't working. This just makes you sick when it happens :(

Also you could try a camera shop, they might be able to recover it, cause someone once told me that as long as you don't formatt it, the information is there somewhere.

The data is there as long as the card or drive isn't physically damaged and as long as new information hasn't been written on top of your file. Formatting a drive doesn't clear the data that's on a card or drive - it just allows you to write new data on top of what's there.

Gosh what a lot of Camera know how guys and gals thank you for that info for
Sarah, and I'll keep it in mind too. My first thought was"don't fiddle with it yourself go to a reputable Camera / photo Shop.
But I 'm sure it will be OK with all this help.
I keep my photos on computer but also an external hard drive. I do them in sub folders like - Front yard; Back yard' our doggies; Sunsets ; etc and they are in a Folder that has my names and then photo Collection 2009 for instance.
However a few months ago I went to find the 2007 and not a sign of it.
Like Bradley Banks said in his post above I neraly "lost my mind" and I struggled to calm myself, so I could begin the search that I had done several times already, to go back through each Yearly Folder, and inside that each Sub Folder.
I knew they were not deleted but I had to do that search. YEaha I found inside another another subFolder in another Year. Yes I said Thank You God. If I t/f too
quickly and lift my hand up off the mouse, they go into the nearest folder and that is how I 'lost' a whole year of Photos for 2 whole days I was in insanity.
I felt guilty because of my feelings and until I calmed down - I was totally unable to think of what I could do next.

With you Sarah.
