How much is too much?

May 24th, 2010
Hey everyone,
So, I was thinking of entering the BBC countryfile competition, thread: http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/768/countryfile-photographic-competition-uk

And I was thinking of maybe entering this one as one of my pictures: http://365project.org/naomi/365/2010-05-24

The only problem is, that in the rules it states: 4) Images may be digitally enhanced to remove spots or scratches, but not manipulated. Entrants can enhance the picture to make it brighter, clearer etc, but not manipulate the content. BBC Countryfile and the judges reserve the right to exclude any image they believe may have been excessively treated so as to alter its authenticity.

Now, that photo above is quite heavily edited (I basically whacked the shadow up on Picassa), but how much is too much? Like, in your opinion would that be okay? As you can probably tell, I'm a very inexperienced teen photographer so don't really know much about entering competitions or anything so any opinions or advice would be very much appreciated!

Thank you!

Why not post the original too, so we can see the difference. That might help.

Not having seen the original, I agree with Rachael that it is hard to compare. Beyond that, you did "not manipulate the content", so worse case is the judges could say "NO".

I entered a contest with a picture that was colorful, but I didn't think was much. (from bottom up: green field strata, tree line with red barn strata, distant ridge in shade covered with white clouds, all this in distinct layers, barn had radio antenna to one side) not much of a picture, got an honorable mention from that shot. So give it a try.

Thank you! Oopsy, forgot the original might be useful xD I've edited it into my original post :]

Well, looking at it now, it seems to have been changed laods. But it might still class as being "enhanced to make it brighter, clearer, etc." Hmmm, really not sure. Would suggest that since the deadline's miles away yet, don't submit it right now and see if you get other photos that are good but don't need so much editing. That's my plan - am also going to give it a go. Good luck. :-)

i agree with rachael, might be just a bit to enhanced, although still a great photo!
i think you should just get out there taking more photos, and practise trying to get the pic you want without to much manipulation.
but you could always enter it anyway, and see what happens. whats the worst that can happen - they exclude it, but at least you would know you still entered a brilliant photo! :-) good luck anyway!

I think the cropping has done a great deal to the image, and that you need to compare cropped vs cropped when making the decision. Re-reading the rules you ARE allowed brighter/clearer pics, which is what you have done. You do not appear to have changed the composition of the pic, which is what they don't want - so I would vote that you enter the competition.

If you are willing to enter and see what happens, many of us would be very interested to know whether this amount of change is too much or not!
