Stock Photos

October 6th, 2011
Hi All!
I have a query. I've noticed that I love taking photos but I don't think I want to or have the ability to become a photographer (I think that the pressure of having to get the shot and customer requirements would hurt my passion for it).
But I was thinking of maybe joining a stock photo site, so I could try to make a little side profit from what I'm doing.
I'd love to know anyones thoughts on this. Would it be worth it? Would I still be able to use my own photos for me? I don't know enough about it, so I thought I'd open it up to the masses.

I was recently advised that as a rule of thumb, you can expect to earn approximately £1 per picture, per year with (the right) stock image library.
Once you have got to about 1000photos submitted to them.

Obviously, you have to achieve the right quality standards for your pictures, and a subject matter appropriate to the library that you use.

Oh, and everybody with a camera is seeking to make money from it these days so you're heading into a competitive marketplace...

@rocket27 I have been looking into doing the same just recently .. I'd like to do more with my photography work but just don't know how to go about doing it. I think putting your photos into a stock photo website is a good idea, your able to build up a raport with the website and, I believe on some websites, earn a higher percentage the better your raport.
Good luck with this!

In all honesty, I have looked into this too and to me I just can't fathom it... you jump through lots of hoops for very little return. I followed the suggestion of one of my mentors and began showing a few pieces at art galleries... a piece I thought was worth next to nothing sold for over $100. (and I have sold quite a few others the same way) I would suggest finding local art galleries or even shops to sell in, you will have way more of a benefit out of the deal then a minimal percentage for selling to the masses.
