Help a novice with indoor shots

October 18th, 2011
I'm going to shoot an event in the meeting center where I live. An expo. So I'll have some areas with natural lighting, some with florescent, some with both, some canned ceiling lights...you name it. I'm not that experienced with indoor photography...not as much as with outdoor. I need some quick tips for getting a great exposure when you have to be quick. What would you say are some key pointers you can share??? I'm advance beyond auto settings but by no means an expert.

make sure to shoot in raw that way you can adjust the color temperature after the event this is esp true because you will have mixed lighting. if you can go to the venue a head of time and take shots that would be good too... being able to play with your iso... and exposure ... check your histogram... if it's going to be a long event then taking a laptop with you to do a quick check is a good idea also... shooting with an external flash where you can bounce light is good also... good luck... and take many many exposures you might even try exposure bracketting just to be sure you are getting good exposures. the biggest challenge will be the lighting and making sure that shadows are not cast on people's faces from that...

do you have an external flash? the swivel head really helps with weird lighting situations because you can bounce the flash - assuming you can use a flash...?

Thanks for the help! I'm on a crash course but I think I just need to attack it and do it. I do have external flash with swivel head and thanks for your tips, Cynce.
