Just a quick question , (well 3 really )
Does anyone use Adobe photoshop lightroom 3 software? ,
...if so how do you rate it ?...
& what are it's best features?
At the moment i am using the Canon software that came with my camera to process all my raw files & all this 'Raw' is very new to me.
I cannot even begin telling you how much I recommend Lightoom over Photoshop. Photoshop is a great tool and lets you do lots of things, but for people who shoot lots of photos and aren't doing photo manipulation, Lightroom will be a much easier, quicker interface for you.
The best thing is you can do all kinds of edits to a photo, and if you don't like them, just change them back; no damage done to your original, no worrying about the number of "undo's" you have in your history.
I'm a Lightroom noob. I've been using it for a couple months now and just love it. I've got 3 but have never used the previous versions, so I don't have anything to compare it too. I haven't even discovered a quatre of the things it can do. Every time I hit youtube I discover something new!
I just shot my first RAW shot the other day. I think I'm lacking in know how in processing to start messing around with all that stuff.
Maybe I'll give my canon software a try and see how it compares.
If you have a Mac, I highly recommned Pixelmator. Works pretty much like Photoshop but only costs...get this....$30! I just got it this past week and LOVE it.
I use lightroom 3 and love it. Lightroom as stated above is more for the editing of your images than the manipulation. It is very user friendly and if you don't like your result "reset" your image. Here is the link for a free trial version give it a try nothing to lose.
@musicguy1982 Daniel thanks so much , I actually ordered lightroom 3 today from amazon it was featured on a 'black friday deal "for just 2 hours"..' offered at HALF PRICE .. so i took a leap of faith and went for it without knowing everything about it.
(it actually sold out very quickly before the two hours were up)
A friend had been using an earlier lightroom edition and said he was happy with it ... These comments have made the purchase even better now , thanks again
Love it! It has a noise reduction feature that works really well. I mentioned before that it reminds me of picasa on steriods. It's a photo management system with similar editing features only way better. You have total control over everything. It's a really a good program. You will love it. There are lots of tutorials online that will answer most any question you have, too.
I wanted to mention this program handles lots of photos at a time. The import and export is very quick. Another feature I like is if I find a picture with settings, I can copy/paste to other pictures and save it as a preset. Then I can easily apply it to pictures anytime. I think we can download other presets too but I haven't looked into to it much. Photoshop has keystone feature so does lightroom. It's under the camera lens section, I think. That's really handy when buildings are tilted and they need to be straightend.
There is also a brush which lets you adjust sections of a photo. You can work with levels and each rgb color. Ah, just play with it and you will learn it. Congratulations!
I LOVE Lightroom 3 and can not recommend it enough. Not just for editing but for managing all your photos (essential if you take a ton everyday like me :). Hope you enjoy your new purchase!
I use Lightroom, Steve. I honestly don't what the version is or even if it's the same as others. I got mine for free from the university that I am associated with. I guess it's a perk to teach a college class in the high school. I've mastered Lightroom...but not Photoshop. I think Lightroom is much, much easier.
@mrssmith Thanks Carla , I noticed teachers get a good deal on software .. So if i need some lessons I will give you a call ' miss ' (is that what the pupils call teacher in the USA ? ..lol) thank you again for your thoughts .. I had a little try today on the free download that @hollandcrew sent me in the link above I posted it for today's picture
@charsurmeli Thanks so much for your recommendation its great to read good comments , as the price of Lightroom3 (even at half price ) is not cheap .. thanks again
@jinximages I'm trying to decide between L3 and CS5 (teacher/student editions). There is an additional $50 discount for educators this week and I need to decide. I'm leaning toward CS5 because I want to do more than just basic editing. Thoughts?
@kynosmom If it's just editing you want, CS5 is the way to go. LR3 is a catalog+edit tool. That said, a lot of the stuff people do with CS5 can be done with LR3 if one knows how - it's the advanced stuff, like layer masks and content aware fill, where CS5 takes the cake.
The best thing is you can do all kinds of edits to a photo, and if you don't like them, just change them back; no damage done to your original, no worrying about the number of "undo's" you have in your history.

LR3 is awesome for cataloging, global editing, outputs, cropping and straightening, basic local edits, and batch processing (double points for that).
CS5 is great for powerful editing tools, but the typical "user" won't need that stuff - LR3 is plenty good enough for general edits and corrections.
Personally, I use both, for almost every photo I take. I cannot work without either one.
